You have to laugh....again
With impeccable timing BBC 4 put on a programme last night about the diesel engine.

The surprising story of the hidden powerhouse behind the globalised world - the diesel engine, a 19th-century invention that has become indispensable to the 21st century. It's a turtle versus hare tale in which the diesel engine races the petrol engine in a competition to replace ageing steam technology - a race eventually won hands down by diesel.

Splendidly, car enthusiast presenter Mark Evans gets excitedly hands on with some of the many applications of Mr Diesel's - yes, there was one - original creation, from vintage submarines and tractors to locomotive trains and container ships. You'll never feel the same about that humble old diesel family car again.

More dirty tricks from the Greenblob. It concerns the DECC consultation into changes to the FIT pre-accreditation (the mechanism for developers to lock-in today's tariff for when they commission a renewable energy scheme). The majority of genuine respondents were from troughing companies who obviously wanted the scheme to continue, but:

In total, DECC received 2372 responses to this consultation. This included 385 unique responses; 1606 identical responses received as part of a campaign organised by Friends of the Earth; 266 identical responses as part of a campaign organised by Friends of the Earth Scotland; and 115 identical responses organised as part of a campaign organised by the 10:10 Foundation. Responses were received from a wide range of stakeholders across all sectors with an interest in the FIT scheme and also from members of the public. In particular, there was a strong response from the community energy sector and associated individuals, with just over a quarter of unique responses coming from these groups. We note that this consultation largely attracted unique responses from those with an interest in continuing deployment under the FIT scheme going forward.

So in total the Greenblob was responsible for 1987 of the 2372 responses. NB 10:10 is Franny Armstrong's "The Age of Stupid" climate change organisation.

Google is now celebrating its 17th Birthday with a little cake on my search page. My genuine congratulations, and thanks for making the internet a more interesting and less spammy place.

And no global warming in the satellite record for longer than Google has been alive!

Thanks Alex, that quote is a keep. I can see myself using it more twice on future occasions. Near future.

Here's the transcript of Meirion Jones, ex-BBC but now consultant to Greenpeace, being interviewed on the Media Show:

Well, you know, I've been a campaigning journalist for years - I know you're not supposed to be that, at the BBC, but I managed to do that...

Re the rugby, I live a few streets away from the stadium at Twickenham, and it does seem a little quiet out there, for some reason this evening...

As there is quite a big anti-cyclone parked over the UK bringing chilly nights to a chunk of Europe I did a quick check of the total wind generation for UK, France, Spain, Germany and Denmark. The total was almost 10MW. Which was easily exceed by the UK's Coal and Nuclear combined.

The Solar Impulse 2 plane was launched from Abu Dhabi, amid much media fanfare, on March 9 this year. Today, almost 200 days later involving 8 legs, it is now stuck in Hawaii and it is not going anywhere. So much for the dream.........

Today, some six months later (almost 200 days), we see the solar contraption has yet to even reach the halfway point of it’s planned around the world journey. The plane and its pilots are firmly grounded in Hawaii due to an array of technical problems. In comparison a fossil-fueled jetliner would have completed the trip hundreds of times by now, and that while carrying a payload hundreds of times greater.

Oh dear, what a pity! :)
