An agreement that cardboard for recycling will be put out on a Tuesday night has been reached at the UN climate summit in Paris. The historic deal will see cardboard across the developed world kerbside and ready for collection on a Wednesday morning, though it is acknowledged that some less developed countries may not manage until after lunchtime

Can you recycle wheelie bins? We have 3 already, and by the time you have to separate brown cardboard from other colours, that will be another 2.
All of this concern about polythene bags forming floating islands in the mid oceans, is nothing on the growing problem of wheelie bins cluttering roads and pavements in built up areas after dark. Will they have to have flashing lights on them like builders skips? How will marauding rats, dogs and foxes know which bins to attack? These Green Environmentalists are creating a nightmare environment, strewn with petrochemical derived plastic bins.

If, as I suspect, it mostly originates from shipping (especially cruise liners), then the bag tax will have no effect, apart from raising the cost of a useful, multi-purpose, household accessory by a factor of, er, infinity.

The Hislops live in the beautifull picturesque Kent village of Marden about 20 minute from dreary Maidstone famous for its prison and infamous for its one way system.
I would hate to think the Hislop family wonderful rustic idyl being wrecked and a good nights sleep ruined by a swarm of 500 high Wind Turbines interrupting their scenic view of the " Garden of England ".
There is however a perfectly good Nuclear power station 5 miles away in Dungeness not to mention the perfectly good coal fired power stations being shut down across the rest of the country.
jamesp, I have heard of these islands of floating plastic bags, but never seen photographic evidence. As a yottie, I have sailed through the litter trail of cruise liners and other shipping.
I have never figured out how polythene bags can take 100s of years to breakdown at sea, but can disintegrate in an instant, whilst being carried across a supermarket car park. Is it that polythene bags only break down whilst being useful, but when useless, like climate scientists, they go on, and on, and on?

Polythenes breakdown in sunlight very readily. This was brought home to me when I tried to pickup a 4Litre plastic bottle from the laboratory window sill where it had been sitting (behind glass) for 18 months. My fingers went through the walls and there was a mess as the contents spilled. Fortunately it was a neutral formulation of surfactants in water, not the next bottle of concentrated nitric acid. That was moved with considerable care, and the window sill became a non-storage area.
It is highly unlikely that thin plastic bags would float around the oceans for ever and ever. I have always thought that these floating islands were a greenie fantasy, because if they existed surely those concerned for the environment would clean them up with one of their publicity chasing ships.

jamesp/GC: As anyone who has rod-fished for cod in the Channel close to the ferry routes, it is not unusual to find a miscellany of non-floating jetsam in their guts including cutlery and sanitary products.
Salopian, it is many years ago, but I used to do a fair amount of scuba diving. I have seen what is on the Channel and Solent seabed.
Through work, I have also had to visit a fair few sewage works. It is amazing/sickening/appalling what some people manage to get down the foul drains of houses, that then has to be raked off the sewage intake screens/grills at the treatment works.
Being a country bumpkin, I grew up in a house with no mains drainage, and if the drains to the septic tank blocked, there was a set of drain rods......
Graeme No3, that the floating islands of polythene bags are a Green exaggeration/myth has become my assumption. I can accept that floating rubbish, like seaweed can clump together at sea.
Their sightings are never made from cruise liners, but on routes rarely used by commercial shipping. I think it is in the same areas that ancient mariners reported spotting sea dragons, clashing rocks, etc and just round the bend from the edge of the world, where boats fall off.
TerryS I think Trenberth's missing heat fell off the edge of the earth, from the deepest part of the ocean. It is the only logical explanation left for global warmists.
All climate change - yes ALL - is 100% natural and has nothing to do with carbon dioxide. It's obvious that rising CO2 levels have not affected temperatures this century, and there is absolutely no valid physics that any of you can produce to show why climate should be affected by CO2.
The global mean temperature varies in cycles that appear to be regulated by planetary orbits and variations in solar intensity, cosmic rays etc which probably also relate to planetary orbits. For example, the eccentricity of Earth's orbit has a cycle of about 100,000 years which is thought to relate to the spacing of glacial periods, this being because the annual mean distance of the Sun varies over that 100,000 year cycle. There are numerous cycles, but the two dominant ones in the space of a few thousand years have periods of about 1,000 years and 60 years. Both were rising in the 30 years to 1998, but now we have slight net cooling for 30 years, and probably about 500 years of long term cooling due to start within 100 years.
Solar intensity can also vary because of variations in cloud cover. Reflections from clouds affect the albedo by about 20%. For each 1% change (for example to 19% or 21%) there is a temperature change of about 0.9 degree. So all the climate change in the last few thousand years could have been due just to such changes in cloud cover. Clearly there are also other changes in sunspot activity, and you have to ask yourselves whether than could well explain the 1,000 year cycle. What regulates these long term cycles in sunspot activity? Well, the only things that are "regular" are planetary orbits, and it could well be that planetary magnetic fields which reach to the Sun have some effect on sunspots and possibly cosmic rays intensities which, in turn, may affect cloud formation.
It's ALL natural and you have no proof that it could not be.
Until you understand that planetary surface temperatures are not established by direct radiation reaching such surfaces you have failed to pay due diligence. The explanation as to what really determines such temperatures on all planets is there to be read and studied here. It all started with an explanation by the brilliant 19th century physicist Josef Loschmidt who has now been proven right with modern day experiments which show that force fields do indeed create temperature gradients that are the state of maximum entropy.

As I understand it, the bulk of the "islands" consists of fine particulates with a higher concentration than elsewhere, not heaps of colorful plastic trash bobbing around in a visible mass surrounded by clear water. I've seen one photo, only, which admittedly had been created by raking flotsam in a marina until there was enough to photograph.

I've heard it said that even uttering the word curry is not acceptable. I've also heard someone say that there is no such thing as curry.
Whats forgotten is that while we in UK may limit our contribution of rubbish into the seas others won't/don't. The coastal regions of the Middle East for instance. On a launch into the Gulf of Oman (Muscat) one morning we had trouble after 10 mins with engine power of our 75HP Yamaha outboard engine. Stopped the engine and it never started again even though we removed the plastic bag wrapped round the water intake.
Our 5p matters little.

In the UK it is quite clear that we need more wheelie bins. Has anyone thought of a captive breeding programme? It is evident that along with traffic cones and shopping trollies with 3 wheels, they all long to recolonise derelict land and beautiful areas of otherwise unspoilt countryside.
The sight of an untethered wheelie bin going full tilt down a street under windpower alone, is one of the great natural wonders of the modern built envionment, and a lot cheaper than a Tesla. Shouldn't wind turbine designers be looking at wheelie bins for aerodynamic inspiration?
Sir David Attenborough could do a wonderful commentary of wild herds of wheelie bins, sailing across the plains of the Serengeti, with a backing soundtrack of the 'Black Beauty' galloping horse theme music, and it would really help bring home the message of COP21, and put global warming in perspective.

Obviously most of the commentators boosting the whole "oceans of plastic" thing are unaware of the swingeing fines which accompany getting caught breaking MARPOL rules - and indeed are ignorant of those rules.
Those floating patches of plastic have so defied discovery and mapping that the greenies have resorted to Bermuda Triangle tactics...
Undoubtedly there is plastic debris - and as far as I can see actually locating the sources isn't that difficult - but it would generate waycist meltdown at the Guardian if the actual primary perpetrators were fingered.... The oceans are dynamic places as a quick look at the labels / molded in branding on plastics on a beach will show....
Now if the greenies themselves robustly addressed illegal dumping (Mafia + assd bandits around the globe exploiting those insane recycling costs ) instead of say - punishing everybody over supermarket bags.... some progress might be made?

If either video has a failing for a more general viewer, I would say that it is the language used in attempting to explain Beer-Lambert absorption of IR. I think they could just describe the effect as one of "diminishing returns", which is probably a term more familiar to a wider audience without seeming over technical.

Radical Rodent, climate scientists keep coming out with ludicrous press releases, that ARE taken seriously by the BBC and Grauniad. Michael Mann even achieved international fame, and a healthy bank account as a result of getting an allegedly peer reviewed picture published.

Apart from anything else, it is surely not beyond the wit of man to have a 'consistent' UK policy on wheelie bins....?
Where I used to live, we had three bins: black for general household rubbish; blue for recycleable waste (cardboard, glass, plastic etc); and green for - er - green waste.
NOW where I live we have TWO wheelie bins (and a box for glass); black for general household waste; and green for recycleable waste. If you want to dispose of 'green' waste - you have to buy a BROWN wheelie bin....
All too confusing for a senior citizen.....
