Worthington loses it

Take a look at this peformance by Bryony Worthington at the Rushlight awards, a red-carpet event for greens. While you might get the impression you are listening to a slightly immature schoolgirl, you have to remember that this is the woman who wrote the Climate Change Act, possibly the most far-reaching piece of legislation in living memory. Suddenly, the state we are in all starts to make sense.

The bit where she compares Nigel Lawson to a rat (12:00 mins) is simply astonishing.

Although nobody starting from scratch would set up a hereditary upper chamber, the old House of Lords with predominantly hereditary peers was a lot better than the present one. They may have been largely a bunch of Tories but at least they were independently minded and weren't looking for promotion by fawning over the government. Also, a lot of them had considerable knowledge of some subjects and could make useful contributions in debates involving relevant topics.

Today the House of Lords is dominated by political nominees who can be relied on to do the bidding of the party that nominated them.

She sounded nervous to me, speaking very much out of her depth. Unlike Walport who was at least a confident speaker. The sad truth about both of them is they don’t really know much about their chosen speaking subjects. They’re both using the minimum facts and the maximum waffle and cliché. Both pitch their talks too low for their audiences, running round the usual selling points that have become stale even for their fellow warmists. If you have to sit through a long talk, you hope at least you learn something new and neither speaker managed to impart anything I hadn’t heard many times before.

It seems to be a flaw that pervades the dramagreen cohort. As a group they’re remarkably unimaginative. Their insults are predictable, their anecdotes are limited and they can’t even scrape together those genuine facts that could resemble a case for CAGW. Most vocal warmists are not interested in CO2 or even CO2 reduction, they just like the concept of saving the planet. Like the Iraq war they have their minds set firmly on the bit where they’ve won hearts and minds but have no plan how they’re going to get there or even if the people they’re going to inflict it on, support the idea. That sort of detail is for other, lesser mortals.

So it wasn’t really her speaking ability that let her down (not sure I could do better) but her lack of interest in the subject.

Tricky for the mods, I posted a tough little tittie comment 'cause it might stop people from trying to best each other. Or busting to tryst each other, whatever I mean when I perv on fecund sheilas and the mind goes round and round behind me eyes like a mad woman's breakfast thinking more sex, more sex, get ya gear off show us ya tits even on telly and not for real. Top word that fecund, know what I mean? I'm not into that deep psychological motivation stuff, we already got shot of one expert who the poms took in for board & lodging, know who I mean? Those Spoonerism thingos are great like "a well-oiled bicycle" is "a well-boiled icicle". Not sure if I was talking about a bicycle or an icicle before because they are both like female types hangin' around in greenie mobs like red roos at a free grog booze-up I said roos not roots. Like the nurse who got it 180 wrong when she went to prick his boil but that's not a Spoonerism just a bad choice of words and not very funny ha ha. If she wanted a joke I could have given her a beauty, know what I mean? And that old story "Let those without sin cast the first stone" and the British bod that said "Oh bugger off, mother" supposed to be funny, pommie way but nobody laughed. So I cast a first stone figuratively, 'cause the figure as cast already gained a stone since last time. It's time you guys got whipped at Lords again but I was not going to say Lords not like last time cause that's where they speak better than they play cricket but theyre not much good at both. Talk about whips with leather ok and the smell of getting beaten know what I mean? Sooo sexy. It's where they take em to the Tower for head chopping 'n all that brit Lords fun innit?

Ah, there's always doubt. No doubt about that.

Nov 13, 2013 at 9:35 AM | Unregistered CommenterTerri Jackson

Sheesh!!! This woman is to public speaking what my dog was to nuclear physics! She managed to get in a prodigious and obligatory dig at GW Bush (the Left's cheap laugh) and then screwed up over the pronunciation of the Koch brothers.

There have been many posts about the Kochs on WUWT and I have been told there that the name Koch should rhyme with Coke. This caused me to leave this comment:

"Now, I know that ‘Koch’ rhymes with that well-known beverage, but I can’t get it out of my head that it should rhyme with ‘sock’. So when someone up thread accuses Mann of being a ‘Koch-puppet’ my keyboard nearly got a Coke-shower!"

Anyway, the post there (if I may reference it here, Bish?) showed just how many universities and other organisations pushing MMCC are financed by the Kochs: http://wattsupwiththat.com/2013/10/15/oh-the-pain-kochmachine-is-in-many-american-universities-including-penn-state/

johanna (Nov 13, 2013 at 7:47 AM)

The CAGW tsunami has peaked, and is receding.
Up to a point, johanna. The Baroness will be legislating for life, which could be the next 50 years. The current Green intake into the civil service and the media are good for another 30 years at least, and green academia is busy training the next wave. Imagine what the world will be like in 30 years time, with India and China’s GNP growing at 8-10% per year and Europe’s at 0-1%.
Can anyone here do compound interest?

Please do not dismiss this woman as a mad-hatter - even if she is just that. Her CV thus far proves exactly how dangerous she is, how influential she has become and yet the public do not know she exists, she has no qualifications for the job and our political institutions are wide open to being infiltrated by people, like her, who have the ambition to "change society" without ever going near an election.

The truth is you would not want to show this to someone sitting on the fence or not knowledgeable of the subject because they would see a relaxed attractive woman who has confidence in who she is and what she is doing. She is a very dangerous weapon for the alarmists and not to be dismissed as unworthy of our attention.

eesh... I tried watching, gawd - it's hard going.

The film Clockwork Orange comes to mind.

It's tempting ...now, where did I put the mind bleach.... but on reflection I think Ian C nails it - she is worthy of attention because an even worse idjit put her in charge and she is one of the figureheads of the whole AGW malarkey, has already caused considerable damage and is clearly intent on causing more.

The hand waving and little explosive "laughs" are always danger signs IMHO.

I agree about not dismissing her real influence but I strongly disagree about going down the path of thinking you can manage what information certain sections of people can see, and then also worrying about the worst possible interpretations these people could take. This only promises to take you down the path to the level of Bob Ward PR managing. Frankly it would drive me crazy as a way of life. Look what it does to poor old Bob ;)

Personally I'm happy to trust that, even if not now but eventually, people *can* see, as TinyCo2 said above, Worthington's utter shallowness, lack of real interest and lack of preparation on the subject - this shines through here and will always be there to point to.

Elizabeth May said 98% of the warming was in the oceans and later said that the IPCC has a reputation for never over-estimating anything.

Deniers now seems to be their accepted word for sceptics - it's bandied about much more often now, so any complaints about linking it to the Holocaust are just ignored. Cute that she should mention that a lie gets half way round the world before anything can be said to refute it; they know this and use it for their own gains while smiling sweetly.

As for dear Briony, I hope Lawson behaves like the rat she thinks he is and puts her down in the HoL with some brilliant riposte so beautifully couched it takes her a fortnight to realise what he said to her.

WHY WASN'T WORTHINGTON BOOED OFF THE STAGE?

“The bit where she compares Nigel Lawson to a rat (12:00 mins) is simply astonishing.”

Is it normal to refer to people as "rats"?

Former Friends of the Earth campaigner, knows the power of language and it would appear - how to use the language of the worst of Nazi propagandists. Baroness Worthington could have scripted "The Eternal Jew" a film that vilified the Jewish people by comparing the Jews in Europe to a hoard of rats, spreading disease.

Nazi video: The Eternal Jew
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlHVin56U2w

Perhaps the term “rat” is how the Greens refer to pro-market, climate sceptics and Jewish people amongst themselves - after all this was a red-carpet meeting of like-minded Greens and nobody stood up and booed her.

Worthington is a nasty, unbalanced woman and should be expelled from the Labour Party and the House of Lords.

Nov 13, 2013 at 1:47 PM | Unregistered CommenterFay Tuncay

To those saying she shouldn't be given publicity, I'd suggest on the contrary, give her more.

Firstly, whose afraid of a debate? That's the preserve of the alarmists not us.

Second, if she is typical of the er, 'quality' of those pushing the alarmist cause (and given she played a central role with her contribution to the CCA, the why shouldn't she be considered typical?) then their case is necessarily weakened. She's a great asset to climate realists everywhere.

Nov 13, 2013 at 2:06 PM | Unregistered CommenterCheshirered

I agree with Fay about the odious significance of Worthington's reference to Lawson. If denier always suggested we were morally equivalent to neo-Nazis (as John Howard implied in his strong objection to the term last week), rat gives the most deadly Nazi label of all to the most senior sceptic in the UK, who happens to be Jewish. Genocide has always been preceded and accompanied by such foul metaphors. If words don't lead to lethal action in this case it will be because Worthington and her ilk become objects of shame and revulsion instead - a radical change of culture which would have to include the breaking of green halos forever. Having been through the shock of such stigma, having become used to acclaim for their mediocrity for so long, these people could again prove useful to truth and freedom - taking into account the sobering timescales mentioned by Geoff Chambers. Not before.

"I am a male feminist believing women in work should be judged by their brain and capabilities, and get an equal chance in all things. But I can't help feeling this one was 'elevated to the lords' for being pretty and bubbly."

Oakwood, I believe that ALL should be judged by their 'brain and capabilities' we don't need to differentiate women.

However I don't believe that she was elevated to the lords for being 'pretty and bubbly' but rather for being 'on message'
- we have seen a parade of such incompetents promoted well above their abilities simply for being 'on message'.

And what a sorry institution the HOL has become when such as Worthington, Deben and Prescott grace its ranks. The hereditary peers were far superior - of generally independent means they had a sense of honour, duty and responsibility, now we have profiteerers and rabid activists.

Nov 13, 2013 at 3:28 PM | Unregistered CommenterMarion

I agree with Marion, I think she was chosen because of the message, not its quality. One of the reasons I've never had much time for conspiracies in regard to AGW is because of the mass ignorance about the issue. Most of those who say they believe, believe. If they make a bundle at the same time they consider it a happy accident. Those who were first to wave the flag seem most informed and so they get raised up.

As they say 'in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king' and that's true for women too.

Does that include Clegg's wife, Tim Yeo and SamCam's dad? Do you think they were gratefully accepting "happy accidents" ?

What about the arch fiend Al Gore who cooks up the traded carbon credits scheme with the Enron fraudster Ken Lay (who would have got 20 years if he hadn't died of a heart attack) and was a part owner in the (now thankfully failed) Chicago Climate Exchange along with Obama?

Check this out http://www.canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/9629 "Obama’s involvement in Chicago Climate Exchange—the rest of the story"

Not all conspiracy theories are bogus. Sometimes there really are conspiracies. That's why the word exists and there are laws against them.

There is an _awful_ lot of money to be made with the biggest confidence trick in the history of the universe - too much for "happy accidents"

I have just finished listening all the way through. She is a poor public speaker, puffed up with her own self-importance. I'm sure the audience were thrilled to hear all about the birth of her son, breast-feeding and slagging off the Daily Mail. I have googled Green Globe Network and see that they have disbanded......I wonder why?

"Green Alliance hosted and co-ordinated Green Globe Network since its exception over ten years ago. The environment for thinking and dialogue on international environmental policy has changed greatly over that period. We have decided not to continue the network in future years, but to seek new ways of engaging in the UK debate on international environmental policy."

But looking through the Green Alliance website, it looks like just another lobby group although seemingly influential (according to themselves). Their report and accounts for 2012-13 http://www.green-alliance.org.uk/uploadedFiles/GreenAllianceTrusteesReport2012_13smallpdf[smallpdf.com].pdf is an interesting read. They have reports on Green Conservatism, Green Liberalism and Green Social Democracy to re-energise green thinking in the philosophical traditions of the three main parties - this might help explain why there is nothing to chose between them and why people like Paxman don't want to vote for any of them.

Veolia funded between £5001 and £20,000 (Deben). Other funders WWF RSPB, FOE, Greenpeace, Christian Aid as well as businesses. And £120-140k from European Climate Foundation. And so the merry-go-round continues to revolve.

It would only take a new non-Green PM to axe these parasites - by cutting advocacy research grants, and government departments like DECC, getting rid of the DIFID, stopping charity status to Greenpeace, FoE and the WWF and breaking up the BBC. Why did this remind me of a really awful student presentation, the kind where the student is totally unprepared and has to just "wing it" and babble. There was no intelligent content at all, and when particular names were mentioned (Tony Abbott, Newt Gingrich, Lord Lawson, et al.) she merely smeared & jeered her way through.

While attributing murderous desire to Tony Abbott might be her idea of a joke, the fact that his party has won a convincing victory shows her feeble-minded confidence in Australia's commitment to the war on "carbon" to be misplaced.

She butchered her references to US politics, for whatever it's worth. Newt Gingrich was never a "Senator" and was never "impeached" (for just a couple of examples of her ineptitude).

As for her lack of eloquence, never have I heard more "uh" and "ah" emissions punctuating the babble of an insipid schoolgirl. It really is difficult to believe that this can be a prominent political person in the UK.
