Commenting, captcha and coming onboard
The irritations of comment moderation and captcha should, I hope, now be a thing of the past. It is now possible to register as a commenter on the site, enabling you to bypass captcha and moderation. If you are already a subscriber, your existing membership will do this for you and you need take no further steps.
Your username can be a pseudonym if you like, and should be a pseudonym if you are concerned about privacy.
There is a registration link in the navigation bar to the right, or click here.
To log in, hit escape or use the login link in the navigation bar.
Dreadnought. I just replied to the email you sent, but it is bouncing. I have manually confirmed your account, so you should be able to log in now.

While a user may only change his/her display name, the Bishop has the higher power of changing the account name. An email with an appropriate supplication should do the trick.
>I can't see any details other than my user name "Green Sand"
I see gleickp... :-)
The bit you're not seeing is usually along the bottom, not the yellow box.
Green Sand - I'm using Chrome and when I hover over your post name I see something else in the bottom left of the screen - where a link would appear if you were to hover over a hyperlink...
If anyone wants me to change their username to a pseudonym please let me know.
Clearly this registering lark, timed to coincide with Googles history deadlines, is so our host can flog off all our details to murky marketing types...
Makes a change from the indulgences, I suppose.
:)
Bish,
Thanks for opening up to registration. Much appreciated.
Many thanks.
This is better well done
and I can fix goof ups yah

Hmmm. "a thing of the past"
Let's all hope it is not like the snow in the UK. That "thing of the past" keeps happening.

It's strictly an issue of the programmer being willing to add a bit to the regexp that defines what's allowed. For example, a regexp that will validate probably 99% of all email addresses (rfc 2822) runs about 80 characters, while a 280 character expression will allow maybe 99.8% of valid email addys. With about 6500 characters, you can allow all but email addresses with internal comments; but a smaller regexp can preprocess the addy to remove the comments. :) I wouldn't blame anyone for not using that 6500 character regexp (regexps give me a massive case of tired head), but allowing punctuation marks or even white space within a user name or nick does not seem that onerous.
I, too, don't like having to use a hyphen instead of the dot I use elsewhere. I am absolutely sure that I will become completely frustrated when I attempt to log in as gary.turner.
cheers,

Captcha has become a problem for myself and I suspect others here and elsewhere. Permissions aside, the need for reading glasses and a noticeable loss in pattern recognition over the years has made Captcha a barrier that is impenetrable at times.
Any reason why you feel the need to email people's password to them, without even encrypting it?
I'm stuck with the system as is. If you want to change your password, you can do that.

If you click on the member profile in the black toolbar when you login in, you will be able to change your display name to whatever you like.
That doesn't change the login name, though, does it?
This is well nifty!
Test: typo edit ... YESSS!!!!
How long does a login last?
I've logged in three times today already.
