Quote of the day
Welcome to the neo-medieval world of Britain’s energy policy. It is a world in which Highland glens are buzzing with bulldozers damming streams for miniature hydro plants, in which the Dogger Bank is to be dotted with windmills at Brobdingnagian expense, in which Heathrow is to burn wood trucked in from Surrey, and Yorkshire wheat is being turned into motor fuel. We are going back to using the landscape to generate our energy. Bad news for the landscape.

May be the quote of the day, but the story of the day surely is this;
"German insurer Munich Re held orgy for salesmen"
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-13454160
In 2009 UN officials claimed that Global Warming pushed women into prostitution.
Maybe employees of Munich Re, an insurance company noted for its devoted and intense work in the issue of climate change and the consequences of global warming, was doing some basic field research.
Mac, other Munich Re employees taking part in a different type of orgy
"IPCC nominates lead authors for the next assessment report"
"Two Munich Re employees are among the experts nominated to be lead authors for the IPCC’s next assessment report, due to be completed in 2014."
http://www.munichre.ru/en/media_relations/company_news/2010/2010-06-24_company_news.aspx
Insurance industry authoring IPCC report? Conflict of interest?
If you have fun with prostitutes it makes it easier to write climate porn.
While I sympathise of course with intellectual libertarian arguments to make societal decisions intelligent and economically sensible, it is ALWAYS going to be a losing strategy.
The left is too well versed (and have 25K slightly leftwingers at their disposal to froth up anecdotes, at self set salaries, at the BBC ) to frame things as injustices etc., and claim much needed baroness-ships subsequently to tackle the new injustices.
no
The proper strategy is to play along and demand the same entitlements, and more.
The BBC hiring policies seem very unfair to me, and should be our eternal focus.
Entitlements should be for EVERYBODY, not just for the slightly leftwing unionised left.
Everybody can start a company. So everyone should have the right to a relaxed temporary sting at the taxpayer's expense, as well. Why the exclusion why the parcellisation of jobs and types of people and careers?
Instead of decrying dams in scotland let's build high rises in London!
Just for hauling water up, for pumps and turbines.
Let's play along!
Where is that cunning design for a mile high tower in Londonistan, just to haul water up, from windmills. Cool!
We will never be able to attack and reduce entitlements, we will only be able to claim our just fair seat at the banquets tables ourselves. That's where the money is. Until the money is throughly gone, for all.
So yes: it is all scams and waste. But go with the flow and exacerbate the lunacy is only thing that will help us forward. Not arguing with professional arguers.
Matt Ridley says:
It's a damn sight worse than bad news for the landscape.
phinniethewoo
I suggested that the M25 could be lined with wind turbines to provide that wind power that lots of Londoners seem to love. It had the advantage that London is the only place where there is plenty of spare grid capacity. Unfortunately there were no takers for my idea.
The full Matt Ridley article is worth a read. It really is remarkable that an "advanced" economy insists on going backwards, while "backwards" emerging economies like China demand to move forward by embracing energy the UK rejects.
Posted this in unthreaded but it is relevant to this discussion.

Absolutely correct.
And not least Unite who have been major cheerleaders for cAGW in general and Eddie Milipede in particular. And bollocks to their union members in the real energy sector. Shameless barstewards.
How long before Matt Ridley does a write up on gas hydrates? This is a subject that has excited James Delingpole today - so I have done a little reading. It appears that the tri-annual conference is to be held in Edinburgh this year:
7th International Conference on Gas Hydrates
begi ns July 17, 2011
The 7th International Conference on Gas Hydrates (ICGH 7) will take
place in Edinburgh, Scotland, on July 17-21, 2011. ICGH 7 is the latest in a
series of conferences held every three years since 1993. The conference
encompasses all aspects of hydrate research; from fundamental physical
properties, applied flow assurance, to global climate change, ICGH caters
equally to both academia and industry. ICGH provides an excellent forum
for participants to meet others with similar interests, and exchange ideas,
expertise and experience, over the broad field of gas hydrates. Themes
for the 2011 conference include: Gas Hydrate Fundamentals, Natural Gas
Hydrates, Energy & Novel Technologies, and Extraterrestrial Gas Hydrates.
There will be two special sessions focusing on Gas Hydrates & Global
Climate Change and on Gas Hydrates & Flow Assurance. Please visit the
conference website http://www.icgh.org/ for more details.
As our host is more or less on the spot, perhaps he can insert an observer and commentator?
I'm trying to figure out how much of Great Britian's insanity is self inflicted and how much comes from the EU - any ideas? It doesn't seem like the rest of Europe is destroying their industries quite as quickly and thoroughly as the Brits are.
If they were serious about global warming they would be planting oil palm in Cornwall.
The Mayans were right! Let's just enjoy the remaining 2 months left, and hope to hitchhike a last-minute ride on the proverbial Vogon spaceship when things will go bad
