It's clear how strong the La Nina cooling is in the UAH Aqua Ch. 5 data Bastardi features in his post.

Joe, I've been listening to your forecasts for awhile now. I have a question. Why do tropical cyclones tend to go north whenever they can? I realize they follow the path of least resistance but they shoot north when they get the chance. Does it have something to do with magnetic north? Thanks
