Reprinting

Just had word from the publisher that The Hockey Stick Illusion is reprinting. Pretty chuffed.

Congratulations! As a publisher myself, I understand just how few books get a second go a the presses. That is a very good sign.

Oh, by the way, yer grace. Is it possible to increase the size of the font on this posting table? My guess is that is about 8 point and damn near impossible for my poor old eyes to make out. I have tried using the Preview Post option and while that makes what I wrote easier to read and correct, I am punished by the dreaded "Copy the twisted and distorted five letters to prove you are really human" feature.

All very frustrating.

I am about half way through - it is a very good read. Everyone should buy a copy!

Don Pablo, it should be possible to increase the font size in the Post box - something the guys at squarespace should be able to help with - it will be a one line css change and might even be doable by the Bish.

This excellent turn of events is precisely as it should be!

Congratulations!

Any clue how many copies were printed and/or sold the first time round? I don't mean to distract from the apparent success of your book, but re-print news must always be met with some skepticism because they are good marketing ploys. A book that goes out of print after its initial run of 10.000 copies has done no worse than a book with five re-prints of 2000 each.

[BH adds: I believe it's 2000]

Congrats! I've bought 4 copies now for various people and nearly finished my copy. Thoroughly good read and now I've a better understanding of Steve M's tenacity in uncovering the story.

Jan 30, 2010 at 4:04 PM | Unregistered CommenterAtomic Hairdryer

Yes congrats Bish. Just finished reading the story. What a blast to be sure. Ordered my copy from my local bookshop to help keep it in business, worth the extra two quid over amazon's price I reckon. Now how do I go about getting Mosh's book?

Jan 30, 2010 at 4:15 PM | Unregistered Commenteroxonmoron

CONRATULATIONS!

I'm up to the last chapter now. It is an excellent read and should be compulsory reading for MPs (not that they would understand much of it). I will be giving it a 5* rating on Amazon.

Having contributed to John Costella's Climategate Analysis at http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/reprint/climategate_analysis.html, your book has now pretty much convinced me of my earlier conclusion as to who the whistle-blower is.

I will be submitting evidence to the Science and Technology Committee's inquiry into the "unauthorised publication of data, emails and documents relating to the work of the CRU" and will be recommending that the committee read at least chapter 15 (The Meaning of the Hockey Stick) of your book.

BIg round of applause, all together now......

Well done.

Well done, your Ecclesiastical Eminence: well done indeed!

DK

P.S. To change the box inputs, you will need to change the CSS as follows:

input textarea {
font-size:140%;
}

Well done, halfway through it and becoming more and more appalled b the antics of the Hockey team

Like to add our note of congratulations. Hope more reprints on the way. Have you sold the film rights yet ?.

DK, Don Pablo

The joy of Squarespace is avoiding CSS for the most part - it's all done through a push-button front end so you don't have to get into coding. I think that's fixed it, but please let me know if there are further tweaks required.

Jan 30, 2010 at 5:05 PM | Registered CommenterBishop Hill

I'll add my congratulations to the others Yer Grace, well deserved. I'd second Phillip Bratby's comment that a condensed version of Chapter 15 would be an excellent submission to the Select Committe. It summarises well why the Hockey Stick issue is so important, andis exactly the sort of thing that an educated group of politicians should be getting their heads around.

Is the state of chuffed a good thing?
I still needs to gits me one of them English English to American English dictionarys.
(e.g. gits me: American slang for aquire - wih a conotation of not having to pay premium price).

Can I be so bold as to suggest that everybody go and read the excellent piece by Philip Stott at

A copy of The Hockey Stick Illusion just arrived in Bedford, New Hampshire, USA today. It looks beautiful.

Jan 30, 2010 at 6:17 PM | Unregistered CommenterKevin

Many congrats - My Amazon review 5* - suggests this should be
Evidence rather than a book about a statistical 'fiddle'.

ps
Philip Stott is getting pretty worked up in this latest JD blog - Worth a look.

Got it a few days ago on the US west coast. Shipping costs as much as the book, but still cheaper than the US price: $58-$71. Any plans to publish in the US?

[BH adds: I've got a literary agent working on it. If we get nowhere, I'll self-publish]

Jan 30, 2010 at 8:51 PM | Unregistered CommenterSchuyler

Phillip Stott - is he the guy that does Radio 4's [something to do with the planetary sciences that my old and befuddled brain can't recall and, in this case, Google is definately not my friend]?

If it is, my respect for him, already high, has gone up a few clicks...

Jan 30, 2010 at 9:22 PM | Unregistered CommenterDennis

Dennis: Yes he is the resident expert on Radio 4's Home Planet. He diplomatically argues with the warmist brigades.

Jan 30, 2010 at 9:43 PM | Unregistered CommenterPhillip Bratby

HOME PLANET

Thanks Phillip, top man.

The other Phillip [Stott] has always seemed [to me] to be an enquiring scientist - or is that now an oxymoron?

Anyhoo, I like his questioning values - would that there were more like him..

Jan 30, 2010 at 9:51 PM | Unregistered CommenterDennis

Well done - well deserved. I'm going through my copy just now.

Congratulations on the success of the book: it's heartening to discover that the market for AGW-sceptical books is so strong. (The Turning Tide household managed to buy itself THREE copies of Christopher Booker's work for Christmas, so we're doing our bit for the sceptical publishing sector!)

Jan 30, 2010 at 10:43 PM | Unregistered CommenterTurning Tide

Mine arrived in the mail on Friday and I'm well into it. Although I've always been sceptical, I've come only relatively recently to Your Grace's Diocese, and it is now my standard reference for those of my warmist friends who persist in their heresy.

Congtratulations for what is a wonderfully clear explanation of events to date.

Nice mention from Christopher Booker

"Another new book, The Hockey Stick Illusion by A W Montford, brilliantly tells the bizarre tale of how Mann's colleagues, calling themselves "the Hockey Team" and now at the heart of the IPCC, managed to resurrect the discredited graph for inclusion in its 2007 report. Montford's book, if inevitably technical, expertly recounts a remarkable scientific detective story"

Yer Grace,

A toast to ye, and may this be just the ebb of a sweeping tide that washes away the lies. May the wind be behind ye and the rain soft, and ye sell a million copies of yer book.

Any chance of an ebook?

[BH adds: Yes, there will definitely be one. I'm waiting to see if I can get a US contract since this might incorporate ebooks]

I am half-way through my copy. I never thought I would be laughing out loud over the antics of the Team. Great read, Bish - even the technical parts!

If I were Mann I'd thinking of hiring a hit-man to rid me of this turbulent priest!

Your book plus this video will do for him!

Gon yersel bish! My copy arrived yesterday. When I'm finished reading it I will be passing it on to some wavering Hockey Team supporting colleagues.

I claim the credit for this. My purchase was the "tipping point" which required the publishers to have another go.

Good stuff Your Grace. I'm going to buy copies of both your book, and Steve Mosher's, and donate them to my old school and local library in Aberfeldy.

A magnificent book, thank you. I got it Friday and I've just finished it, fascinated and appalled in equal measure. It's beautifully clear, works through everything in a logical order so it all hangs together with horrifying clarity. I'm glad you managed to add the "Climategate" e-mails; linked to your histories of the various publications, those revelations of the backroom shenanigans are truly damning.

(I tried to offer it to my sister - a fully paid up member of the AGW brigade who works in wind power - but she refused point blank to read it, saying she would only burn it :( Which is possibly a good recommendation, since it implies that she views it as a threat. As indeed it is.)

I just ordered it from my local bookshop - Amazon is wonderful, but I like to support bookshops - and they still get "reprinting - no date".

When you get word that it's back in print, please let us know so that I can order it again. :-)

I've been told that the reprint arrived back in stock earlier this week.
