More target setting insanity

Criminals are not being prosecuted by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) or are being offered deals so that money can be saved and targets can be met, according to the Police Federation vice-chairman Simon Reed.

I'm a magistrate. The CPS is increasingly trying to steer us towards imposing lower sentences. On Monday, in a case where we were thinking of sending a man to jail for serious theft, the CPS lawyer actually stood up and "reminded" us that the sentence guidelines suggested he should be given a community penalty. It sounded more like a defence plea! This government is edging ever closer to removing all discretion in the criminal law. Outrageous!
