I saw that story on Dec 23 in Auto-Express
5-Live news just led with
"CO2 emissions from NEW cars have increased for the first time in 10 years
... manufacturers say it's due to the decrease in diesel sales, as more people buy petrol instead"
Actually this news has been out more than 1 week, this shows that BBC News is political agenda pushing, rather than actual news.
... their prog continues with alarmism about plastic.
An Elon Musk number that just jumped out at me...
At the present rate of production some of those people who paid $1000 deposit for a Model 3 (over a year ago now) will have to wait up to 83 years for delivery...

"Perhaps we'll never have the situation where a researcher will say I spent 3 years looking into this and didn't conclusively prove anything"
Apparently the researchers from Scripps who came up with the "universe in a grain of sand / Total Perspective Vortex" approach to measuring total ocean heat I posted about earlier spent 15 years coming up with that...
I wonder if they had other duties in that time.

I was basing my comments on the work of Ancil Keyes and to a lesser extent Millikan as well as more recent climatologists. But will admit that there are many honest researchers who do what you say and another group who hedge their bets by stating that whatever dearly held long established theory is weakened by their research is actually undamaged. Perhaps we'll never have the situation where a researcher will say I spent 3 years looking into this and didn't conclusively prove anything.

Whatever the report of the day says is bad for us the general attitude seems to don't worry next week's report by experts will say it is OK. In my opinion reports by experts on all subjects will soon be regarded in the same vein.
* Not restricted to scientific research as recent high profile sexual assault cases show.
October last year MSM went one better - two studies/papers on coffee in same week, one saying it's bad, one saying it's good.
The BBC is wallowing in the report of falling car sales. They deseperately want to blame Brexit but all the evidence points to the problem mostly stemming from the governments plans for punishing diesel vehicles. The other main factor is the unsustainable purchase of cars on contract where diesel cars could be worthless in 3 years. The Bank of England has been warning lenders for over a year now of a new financial bubble.
