For me if you have to get out of bed it's a quake.
If you feel something, and even if it moves an unstable vase its just a tremor.

Quake conjures up impression of real risk to life and property.

=========
Values
Depends on : magnitude, depth and distance of epicentre from you
..and maybe another factor
I guess you get a 3 or a 4 and it still just be a tremor where you are, cos the epicenter is deep or offshore etc.

I don't think that 'tremor' has any technical meaning. Very small earthquakes can be called microquakes but they are still earthquakes. The problem is those who have politicised the word 'quake' in relation to fracking. It's not wrong to keep an eye on fracking quakes but then the same should be applied to thermal schemes.

Talking of quakes, I wonder if the Johnson and Johnson court decision will make those drug companies wanting to legalise cannabis for personal use, think twice.

"A 2.9 earthquake is getting there. Most people in the vicinity will have felt it and small items may well have been moved about. "

If this is the answer/explanation about the difference between an Earthquake and an Earth Tremor, thank you.

Pumice rafts from Tonga volcanicity are well known and not uncommon, some drifting to Fiji. But today the environmentally (un)conscious have to find everything is new and potentially important. Tonga has within its territory the Tongan trench, a major and very active subduction zone, so is associated with andesitic volcanism. Andesitic volcanism is more explosive and erupts more gas-rich lavas than most oceanic (and basaltic) volcanos. What's there really to discuss? Who says the GBR will ever be involved?

Interesting that my raising of the unexpectedly large Blackpool tremor got me accused of “pointing shrill green fingers”. This is symptomatic of the reason that the US Democrats must avoid a climate debate.

The issue is too charged for any reasonable discussion.

My record on here shows I am not opposed to the Democrats when compared with the alternatives the USA has got. But that doesn’t usually get me labelled “green”. Yet any nuance is immediately seen as being not ‘one of us’ and thus being ‘one of them!’

It’s the same on the other side. No green initiative will ever be enough for green voters. And no nuance justifying not going further can be made. You immediately become persona non grata.

It would be suicidal to discuss climate change in public. There could only be complete orthodoxy without any limits. Up to and including killing the first-born to reduce population pressures.

Whatever does happen, it will be to a small area and will have happened thousands of times before.
Take your pick, and add some more

A) Block out sunlight, raise and cool air and seawater temperatures
B) Provide a home for millions of micro-organisms that will filter surface seawater
C) Reduce wave action
D) Increase friction and abrasion damage to corals that were going to be broken by the next storm, prompting regrowth.
E) Provide an "Unprecedented" number of unique micro habitats that have never been filmed in colour, by so many before, with cheap cameras and snorkeling gear. All available soon on YouTube.
F) Provide a wonderful source of Green abrasives for sanding and smoothing anything
G) Provide wonderful opportunities for tourists and ecologists to fly in, and boost local economies

That seems a fair assessment of Merkel's legacy for Germany and the EU. Hopefully BREXIT will allow the UK to commence the process of reversal.

If St Greta can provoke Civil War between US Democrats, the EU may come to its senses and realise that the Great Green Con Era is over.

Mark for German stuff, it's always worth checking

Gosselin usually gets things first
But his last Germany post was about climate hysteria risking car factory jobs.

I saw the pummice stone story on CNN while clicking through the channels

https://edition.cnn.com/2019/08/25/asia/pumice-stone-underwater-volcano-great-barrier-reef-intl/index.html

What utter tosh the whole thing is. I think the blocking out of the light and the friction as it rubs over the Barrier Reef will cause a whole lot more damage and will not "cure" it of whatever ailment they think it has.

PR government always reminds me of the proverb that a camel is a horse designed by a committee.
