"Cut meat and dairy intake 'by a fifth', report urges

"Carbon emissions: Scale of UK fossil fuel support 'staggering'"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-51216084

"A small government agency is supporting fossil fuel projects abroad with estimated carbon emissions of a country the size of Portugal, it has emerged.

UK Export Finance (UKEF), a government agency in the Department for International Trade, is spending billions of pounds on the projects, Newsnight researchers have found.

This is despite a government commitment to cut down on carbon emissions.

The Conservative Environment Network (CEN) called the figures "staggering".

The organisation, which describes itself as a forum for conservatives who support conservation and decarbonisation, said funding the projects was "a blemish on the UK government's record on climate change".

An investigation by Newsnight, in conjunction with Greenpeace's investigations unit found that UKEF has helped to finance oil and gas projects that, when complete, will emit 69 million tonnes of carbon a year, according to government estimates.

That's nearly a sixth of the total annual carbon emissions of the UK."

If true, it does seem more than a little bonkers, while we here are saddled with the CCA.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-lincolnshire-51227844/could-renting-your-clothes-instead-of-buying-them-save-money-and-the-planet

"A company in Lincoln is turning their back on fast fashion and encouraging people to rent clothes instead of buying them.

Lauren Vickers, who runs The Devout, believes the business model will prevent clothes from ending up in landfills and save consumers' money.

According to waste charity Wrap, there are £30bn worth of clothes hanging unused in UK wardrobes."

Good grief:

"Derby staff and students given climate change anxiety therapy"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-derbyshire-51222924

"Staff and students struggling with anxiety over climate change are being offered art therapy.

Eco-anxiety sessions are being held at the University of Derby to tackle feelings of anger, guilt and grief.

One student involved in the workshops said climate change makes her feel as though she is "not going to have a future".

Dr Jamie Bird, who hopes to expand the sessions, said people suffer "climate grief" when seeing what is being lost."

"Greta Thunberg: US treasury chief attacks activist"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-51219530

"Greta Thunberg should go away and study economics before lecturing investors, the US treasury secretary has said.

Steven Mnuchin said the activist's call for investors to divest fossil fuels showed a lack of understanding about the economy and jobs.

"After she goes and studies economics in college, she can come back and explain that to us," he said at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump dismissed the "prophets of doom".

Mr Trump said that campaigners were too pessimistic and should concentrate their fire on countries where emissions are rising. He did not say which countries.

Mr Mnuchin continued the criticism on Thursday. In response to a question about Ms Thunberg's call for fossil fuels to be scrapped, Mr Mnuchin said: "Is she the chief economist?"

He added: "For people who call for divestment, there are significant economic issues - issues with jobs.""

"Would you cut down on meat to fight climate change?"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science_and_environment

"People should cut the amount of beef, lamb and dairy products they eat by a fifth to combat climate change, according to a new report out today.

It says public bodies should lead the way by offering more plant-based options..

But it says if people don’t cut consumption voluntarily, taxes on meat and dairy might be needed.

"Government risks 'undermining' net zero climate goals

BBC Radio 5 Live

Wake Up to Money"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science_and_environment

"Citizens Advice says the government risks "fatally undermining" the UK’s ability to reach its net zero emissions target if it doesn't get public support for changes that need to be made.

82% of the 2,002 adults surveyed by the charity said they backed the commitment to cut greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050.

But just over a third were aware that many houses in the UK will need to switch to a low-carbon heating system, for example.

Speaking to Wake Up to Money, Dhara Vyas, head of future energy services at Citizens Advice, said: "Government's got this commitment. Right now, government is talking to ministers and civil servants. We want to make sure they're putting people at the heart of its plans.

"There will absolutely need to be some sort of government support as well, to help people make these changes, such as switching to an electric car, or upgrading their heating system.""

I see the troll's posts have miraculously disappeared. Has our host returned briefly, or has someone here performed a magic act?

Local news item was like cutNpaste
'In this time of climate change there are mega polluting ships bring goods from all over the globe
If shipping were a country it would be #6 in the list of most CO2 producing between Germany and Japan
... blah, blah
... oh but look here I am on the roof of the ABP Associated British Port building where they are installing solar panels'
ABP man 'yes we are doing our bit 30% of our ports' energy will be coming from renewables'
The sky in the shots is very cloudy/misty so it's obvious the panels generating stuff all.
Basically the item was a PR cutNpaste of ABP material.
Her tweet
Shipping is one of the world’s most polluting industries. Companies are under growing pressure to cut emissions.
This is the view from the Port of Hull today.
@ABPHumber are installing solars panels at 17 ports across the UK.

British Geological Survey guy was just on local radio
"that Teeside earthquake was a very small one,
it was only mag 3
we get 3 of those per year
the Lincolnshire one was mag 5
so this Teeside one is 1,000 kimes smaller"

I don't think any of the fracking tremors got to mag 3 did they ?

"...BBC funding cuts during PMQs..."

It really gets up my nose that I cannot watch Parliament because I have no TV licence. Admittedly one can go in person to Westminster, but the BBC is merely a broadcaster like dozens of others, and happens to have a TV tax all to itself. Why should I pay the BBC to watch Parliament live on the box?

I was delighted to read Robert Peston on ITV News: "In case you were in any doubt, the prime minister and his chief aide, Dominic Cummings, more than give a damn about who runs the BBC - and intend to have a significant influence over the appointment of a new director general...... According to a well placed Downing Street source, if the BBC's board and Clementi "try to put someone like Purnell in [as DG], we will put in a chairman whose first job is to fire him...The likes of Purnell [would be] 'dead on arrival'". This is a reference to the former Labour minister, James Purnell, who is the BBC's director of radio. It is not clear yet whether Purnell is a candidate to succeed Hall."

Go get 'em, Dominic! The Boshevik Brainwashing Company is beginning to see the cost of its bias and wokeness.

Somebody paid for Greta to get in.

A membership to the WEF costs about $60,000 to $600,000, plus an additional fee needed to acquire an attendance badge, which runs about $27,000 per person to get into the conference.

There is obvious sensitivity about how people get to Davos ... and plenty of PR diversions....

announce the end of the BBC license fee at PMQs ? - if only.....

The BBC has an internal communication problem?

https://order-order.com/2020/01/23/victoria-derbyshire-learned-show-axed-yesterdays-times-aticle/
"In an impassioned Twitter thread, Victoria Derbyshire responded to the BBC’s confirmation that her programme is to be taken off air later this year. This follows her defiant stance on air this morning…

“Absolutely devastated at the plan to end our programme (which I first learned about in yesterday’s Times). I’m unbelievably proud of what our team and our show have achieved in under 5 years … "
