Josh Subsidy Sam - the book!

As readers might recall I drew a cartoon for anti-wind campaigner Lyndsey Ward whose story 'Subsidy Sam' was in the news back in April.
I have now completed all the other illustrations for her story and put them all into a book format which is free to download via the Cartoons by Josh website.
If you do download the book please think about making a donation - we are hoping to raise enough funds for a second story, 'Timmy the Tiny Turbine', which Lyndsey has written for younger children.

Josh, just remember how the establishment reacted to Oz No.28 (a.k.a. the Schoolkids issue)... you may well regret your part in this :-)
I am worried that this book may be pitched at too high an intellectual level for most of our politicians to understand.
Should MPs and Local Authority Councillors be forced in their own precious fee earning time, to sit in groups of about 20, and be properly indoctrinated about the harm they are doing to their chances of being elected next time? How will their Grand Children cope with the abuse and derision hurled at them for being associated with gullible and corrupted dinosaurs, deserving of extinction?
After the success (?) of the 'Dolphin Friendly Tuna' tin-can labelling scam, which ensures that all the nicest dolphins have lost all of their best tuna friends to be eaten in sandwiches with lettuce and mayonnaise, could the Royal Society for the Destruction of Birds do a similar scheme and ensure that windturbines are covered with all the redundant monofilament fishing nets, so they cannot rotate at all?
Children would love to use emotional blackmail on their parents, so that they only buy Bird Friendly Electricity.
I thought sure the title would be "The Little Turbine that Couldn't".

Just had a read. This definitely isn't a children's book.
A number of issues arise, many of which are similar to the broader problems of combating any kind of propaganda, most especially when such propaganda is generally accepted to be broadly true:
1) it's very negative. It's not portraying a positive alternative
2) it's very dark. Not good for appealing to children which is sort of supposed to be the purpose
both of which cause...
3) difficulty in distribution. To whom is this targetted? How to get it in front of them?
Perhaps a more productive approach is to do this as satire. Subsidy Sam is a great hook, but it needs to poke fun at pompous protagonists, rather than to picture the despair of the disappointed.
Hi ..I feel I may need to clarify the purpose of SS a little. It was written as a satire and to poke fun at the wind industry and the politicians who support it and parrot their propaganda with no real research into the adverse impacts. It was not intended for children at all. Timmy The Tiny Turbine has been written for children and is completely different with a moral message and a happy ending. We all love a happy ending! Hope you like it when it is published in August and please support the great work Josh has done for our campaign to get the truth out there. 😀

Despite Lyndsey's comment, I am still concerned that some of the simple issues have been pitched above the intellectual capacity of our simple politicians.
Ayla seems to have forgotten New Labour's AGW advertisements on tv whereby children were being frightened about global warming, presumably to instill some kind of pester power to their parents! Or the revolting 10:10 campaign by Richard Curtiss et al where children would be blown up by their teacher if they didn't conform to the agw meme! Curtiss evern referred to it as a "bit of fun!" Says it all!
@golf charlie You will get no argument from me about that. Here's hoping the children's book in August will address your concerns. There is always a chance it will still be over the heads of some politicians, which would not be difficult considering the depth they are buried in the sand. We can but try and have a bit of fun doing so.

To be honest though, I found this one too dark and dispiriting to be truly satire - you didn't laugh at the baddies: you despaired of them.
It's laughter that cuts through and makes the message a) palatable and b) stick. Think Minnesotans for Global Warming with the "Hide the Decline" song.

Thank you for your comments Pendant-General but I can assure you that it has been received with much humour. The story is about the truth and how communities are lied to about impacts. It resonates across the world and I am pleased with the response it has received. People are laughing at the absurdity of it all and that is what I wanted the tale to do.
Lyndsey, any chance of some wipe-clean, pull-out, and throw-up recipe ideas, printed on cards at the back of the book, from Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall?
It would be really great for school children to learn how to cook edible food from the mangled birds they find on nature walks and playing hop scotch on class room roofs.
All counties like to have pies and stews named after their county, and for the last 50 years or so these have been made the traditional way with road scrapings of deer, badger, squirrel, hedge hog and particularly low flying pheasant. In conjunction with the BBC, a whole new genre of childrens cookery programmes could be launched to find the best Wind Turbine Pie, with subtle variations of Protected and non Protected species, from all over Europe Asia and Africa. Schools adjacent to RSPB Bird Reserves and Sanctuaries may need to be given their own special financially elitist category, to match the RSPB's reinvented image make-over.
Inclusion of bats should be awarded special status, as fruit bats are considered a delicacy around the Pacific rim, though some people are wary of fruit bats from Guam and the Guardian, as they can drive you insane.

Josh, golfCharlie. Hold your horses. Before you issue a turbine-gift cookbook, you need to publish an identification manual. It's no good trying to make a mouth-watering herring-gull korma if you haven't removed all the guillimot. Robin orange must not be spoilt by the addition of stray sparrow bits.
Kids like poems, so you could try an avian anatomy version of "Naming of Parts".

The very idea bovvers me.
My views on the book are similar to those of 'The Pedant General'. It will raise a wry smile (perhaps) from BH regulars but have no impact outside the group of likeminded readers.
If it is to be distributed it needs to be supported by a 'facts sheet'. What percentage of an old age pension goes on subsidies? How many birds are killed? Is leaking lubricating oil a common problem?
Interesting book. Did it have a particular installation/site as its inspiration?
@Raff No not any development in particular. Sadly this story travels to almost any country where there is subsidised wind. The communities targeted, the environment, the wildlife or the health of the planet are of no concern to those reaping the rich rewards of handouts that are on our energy bills, as in case of UK, or on the taxes of citizens. In the absence of honest debate and the ignoring of facts other than those 'facts' the wind industry feeds the politicians and media, it is hoped this tale will make some who do not know the truth stop and think and maybe, just maybe, do a little research. Every little helps and this is just a new way of trying to reach out to those who don't necessarily believe everything they are told by multinationals, politicians and 'environmental' groups that received funding from the industry they support.

That seems unlikely. In Germany much of the Energiewende was driven by the desire of communities to take control of electricity supply back from big companies. Wind turbines were often community built and owned. Or do you know differently. What about Denmark, Holland and other wind users. Does you tale of woe fit as badly there too?
Raff, I think you will find that Denmark and Holland have now realised what a complete con they have been subjected to, and are not particularly keen on wasting more money on Unreliable wind turbines.
If Energiewende was really set up by communities wanting to take back control, then they can take responsibility for the failures. It seems that a growing number of communities were 'persuaded' that it would be better, not more useless, and they have no control of the wind anyway.
Peak wind has occurred in the UK, Holland and Denmark. Germany is imminent. Where exactly is the EU wind success story? If you think Energiewende is really good, could you identify what they are relying on when the wind doesn't blow?
@Raff As someone who has campaigned for many years I have contacts across the world all fighting the same thing and facing the same disgusting treatment from the wind industry. Yes Germany too. Golf Charlie is absolutely right in what he says. There are 2200 known anti wind groups and I suspect there are many more that don't campaign on the Internet. It is often said by campaigners that the wind industry's hand book is the same no matter what language it is written in. It is astounding this assault on unwilling communities has been allowed by government's who are supposed to protect their citizens and I do believe if there is subsidised wind, no matter where it is, you will find the same story. Subsidy Sam travels!

Ayla, Italian politics and economics only got where it is today thanks to Garibaldi, and yet he is only famous in the UK for inventing a biscuit.
As a child, I knew those biscuits as 'Squashed Flies' due to the raisins contained within. The most common form of road kill is the squashed fly on the windscreen, and you should not be so dismissive of road kill.
Whether squashed flies can be scraped from wind turbine blades, and rehydrated into something profitable, is something that supermarkets and fast food purveyors are exploring with EU Subsidy/Tax Lawyers, so even now, they are generating income for unwanted forms of life.
I expect global warming experts in Holland, Germany and Denmark are writing about what a success wind turbines have been In the UK, and how grateful communities are to have these useless and Unreliable wastes of taxpayers money littering the countryside.
As they fall into disrepair, they could be turned into modern versions of May Poles, and children could sing and dance around them celebrating the Green Blob's loss of virility.
UK Politicians and the DECC keep shifting responsibilty onto the EU for setting targets for Unreliable energy in Europe and the UK. Perhaps if the UK had ever been asked to vote on these reliable subsidy generators, the political climate across the UK would not have changed. I wonder if that is what is worrying the other politicians in the EU?

The windmill complex near Corpus Christi, Texas is only miles from the nearly extinct Whooping Crane winter nesting grounds. Think of not only the amazing taste of Whooping Crane puree but the status of quite likely eating the end of an ancient species!
It is the perfect entrée for Mr. Obama and the other climate obsessed narcissists who spew their pseudo science in the public square.
Thanks Lyndsey, it was an enjoyable read. Humour/satire about climate alarmism always works, because people are fed up of being lectured by all these holier than thou types. If anything, I'd have gone broader on the humpur.

SS was written in a couple of hours in a fury when I discovered the wind industry had been allowed into schools with a 'Tommy the Turbine' book. A one sided load of nonsense. After the children's story I might do something else that is more amusing. You are absolutely right about people not wanting to be lectured and we need to have different approaches for the messages we want to get over. Thanks for your comments.
