"attended the London School of Economics, gaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics," ... Beddington's research is in population biology and the [un]sustainable [mis]management of non-renewable and renewable [bird-mincers] resources.
And you think I want to have this guy lecture me about a subject where he has no more qualification than some man in the pub?
Even if Phil Jones can't use a spread sheet at least he's qualified to talk about climate.
Possibly a talk where the audience will know more than the lecturer...?
What is an enlightenment lecture?
I was at a private talk by John Beddington about 5 years ago on the state of the world. He said he was very worried that one of the problems the world would soon face was large parts of the population, eg in India, simply left behind by world growth and never prospering. I was intrigued and a couple of us after the talk asked him what his analysis was and what he based it on. "Just gut feeling" was his answer. It really struck me at the time and so nothing I've heard since surprises me.

It's a euphemism for an event where someone shares his be(k)nightedness.

And his solution to that would be..?
An 'enlightenment lecture'....
