Bob's dinner

I think my radio appearance this morning may have spoilt Bob Ward's breakfast, judging by the spluttering this morning.

Dinner will be no better - I'm due to be on the BBC TV news tonight. As I understand it there are two slots, one at 6pm and one at 10pm, covering different angles of the climate/IPCC story.

The poor bugger, he'll be going in to cardiac arrest!

Having said that I'm willing to bet Bob's left testicle that his phone will be doing overtime to his "contacts" about heretics like you being on TV and how he HAS to be allowed on to correct all your lies (although strangely enough he never specifies what it is you are lying about)!

Regards

Mailman

Andrew - you are doing a simply sterling job. As i live in Jakarta, very grateful if you could continue to post links to your media recordings if possible.

Thanks

Well done Andrew. I hope they let you speak your piece rather than try to skewer you.
Its about time the 'denier' label was killed for good.

Sep 23, 2013 at 1:03 PM | Unregistered CommenterFarleyR

Well done, Andrew!
I will make a point of recording both newscasts to make sure I don't miss you.

I hope that this is not simply so that the BBC can justify not giving any balance once the IPCC report is finally released. (Not that they have ever needed to justify their one-sidedness before.)

You're getting good at this Andrew, you certainly mastered the short, informative sound bite this morning. Well done.

Well done indeed - most excellent news.

You'll only get about thirty seconds - so its important to mention that I still want my money back...

Absolutely nothing personal but you are a self identified right wing nut and an absolute gift to the other side. They may as well have Monbiot in your place.

Sep 23, 2013 at 1:27 PM | Unregistered CommentereSmiff

Well they gave Monbiot and some strange "optimist" who isn't really one a free go on R4 on Saturday with their doom and gloom so this is a slight improvement.

If you go up against Richard Bacon don't make such as @rse of it as Delingpole managed.

The Beeb has more gumph up on their webpage. No comment allowed. It seems they've been planning ahead for AR5.

However, there is some good news:

"Eurovision organisers have announced changes to the song contest's jury rules, amid allegations of bribery. From next year, the names of each country's jury will be revealed ahead of the competition in an effort to increase openness and accountability."

Bish, take note of the Shukman nonsense on the lunchtime BBC news; it will no doubt be repeated on the evening news. It's the first time I've heard him say that there has always been natural climate change as well as made by humans. But we're still all going to fry.

Being from outside the UK, it would be very nice to see transcripts of these interviews/programmes.

I know that that entails work, but a transcript is the best record and makes it easier to digest and reference point made.

Good one Bish. I'll be listening. Perhaps you have a chance to correct the BBC News 'line' where they talk about 'pollution' causing CC. I guess they have morphed CO2 into a polluting gas!

Sep 23, 2013 at 2:03 PM | Unregistered CommenterSnotrocket

Good, I look forward to seeing this, and withdraw my snide remark about your 5am slot!
You have been busy, with these interviews and the Spectator article and the GWPF climate model report, it's hard to keep up.

But we're still all going to fry.

I don't want to fry. please increase my taxes and give it to a wind farm developer. That way I know that I did my bit. We have to think of the children!

Someone needs to tell Roger Harrabin that his graph has been thoroughly discredited. But certain memes - like the consensus idea - are hard nuts to crack.

There is a lot of extra-curricular crumbling going on.

For example, look at Slashdot the well-known computer geek forum. It hosts regular stories about the dangers of global warming to a fully compliant audience. But just recently the comments have become much more sceptical, while the AGW supporters have shrunk to a small rump.

Wherever you look amongst the general population, the warmists are in retreat. And the supporters of AGW are not recognising this fact, and not trying to counter it. Their days are numbered...

Sep 23, 2013 at 3:41 PM | Unregistered CommenterDodgy Geezer

More from Harrabin on the BBC web site, with this to me hilarious quote from Patchy:

He also dismissed suggestions of a slowdown in global warming.

"There’s definitely an increase in our belief that climate change is taking place and that human beings are responsible,” he told me.

Quite a strong statement that this is all about belief.

Well done, Bish.

I too caught the bullpoo on their lunchtime bulletin ... it nearly made me puke that they are STILL peddling the same old tat.

A note of caution ... the BBC will always have the final say ... It would be interesting if you gave an account tomorrow as to how what you said you said morphed into what the Beeb said you said.

Good luck.

When we do get the chance to discus AR5 and if there is more hand waving to hide this latest decline in temperatures we should remind everyone of the two earlier ones. Briffa's hidden decline in his proxy temperatures is well publicised, but the wishing away of the mid century temperature decline in the TAR with arbitrary quantities of aerosols has not had nearly enough exposure.

Moreover it links with his Grace's latest paper for the GWPF. By adding a quantity of poorly measured negative aerosol forcing to CO2 forcing the Hadley Centre model featured in the TAR was able to hindcast the mid century temperature dip. Other models followed suite but use different amounts demonstrating the circular reasoning that is in play. With the hullabaloo over the 'hockey stick' not enough emphasis was given to the criticisms in Anderson et al. 2003

See:Climate Forcing by Aerosols--A Hazy Picture. Anderson T. L., Charlson R. J., Schwartz, S. E., Knutti R., Boucher O., Rodhe H., and Heintzenberg J. Science 300, 1103-1104 (2003).

"I think my radio appearance this morning may have spoilt Bob Ward's breakfast, judging by the spluttering this morning."

Lots of spluttering today. WUWT Hot Sheet reports that Michael Mann is spluttering at Judith Curry. How remarkably foolish of Mann.

Sep 23, 2013 at 5:04 PM | Unregistered CommenterTheo Goodwin

Without wishing to be too pessimistic, I reckon the BBC is likely to spin your appearance by describing you as 'a blogger who runs a site sceptical of the orthodox science' and try by that simple explanation to infer that your views should not be taken seriously, and/or is a minority opinion. That is the way that organisation does things these days, and it is pretty disgraceful. I wish you all the best, and hope it's Shukman, and you give him hell.

Sep 23, 2013 at 5:17 PM | Unregistered Commenterlindzen4pm

Am I imagining things, or does the Harrabin report resurrect the Marcott graph?

The one that the Met Office caused all the fuss about on the My Climate and Me website.

Hopefully Bish has read the Guardian, since what ever is there is the script the BBC will be running with.

Sep 23, 2013 at 6:36 PM | Unregistered CommenterMIke

It wasn't quite as firm as I would have put it, but the whole BBC article was encouraging. My spirits were lifted as I could see the hedging of their position, and preparation for discrete backtracking.

Would like the BBC to drop the term "blogger" and find a less frivolous way to describe sceptical opinion. That said, good job!

Six o'clock News

One explanation [for pause in global warming] is that the sun is giving out less heat.
Are you serious? And no mention of cosmic rays?

The deep ocean has, without doubt, warmed up since the 1980s.
Really? Do we have accurate knowledge of the temperature of the deep ocean stretching back that far?

Sep 23, 2013 at 6:57 PM | Registered Commentermatthu

Shukman (sp?) got away with murder in his report (my wife had to restrain my shouting at the bloody tele!) . It really p*sses me off that anything he says is not challenged - and although what you had to say, Bish, was concise and germane, it did not balance the argument - as put by the BBC.

KBO

Sep 23, 2013 at 6:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterSnotrocket

The other BBC trick was to present computer simulations as if they had been prepared in advance i.e. "See how well temperatures have been tracking the computer simulated temperatures up until 1998"

Sep 23, 2013 at 7:02 PM | Registered Commentermatthu

It was great you had a slot on the 6pm news, but sadly your balanced approach may have been too gentle to register. Yes, people should be told the truth, but the IPCC claims to be doing just that.

And @matthu, that graph was appalling. So sad to see it trotted out as if it proved something.

All we can hope is that people can see past the BBC propaganda and get their information elsewhere. I do think there's a change in the air but it will take some time. The AR5 paper is going to give IPCC one more gasp of oxygen, but perhaps from there onwards it'll be downhill.

Sep 23, 2013 at 7:11 PM | Unregistered CommenterPeter Ward

Well done Bish. It's a pity "science correspondent" (what scientific expertise does Shukman have?) forgot to mention the other explanation for the "pause"; namely that the hypothesis of the so-called climate scientists was wrong. And those climate scientists, despite not knowing how the climate works, still insist that we're going to have dangerous warming. The biggest danger is that they will be seen to be liars and charlatans and their funding will be cut.

Sep 23, 2013 at 7:12 PM | Registered CommenterPhillip Bratby

I was amazed by the whole piece - the most balanced by the BBC in a decade at least. I danced a jig. The times, they are a-changing!

Sep 23, 2013 at 7:13 PM | Unregistered CommenterNeil McEvoy

Agree with Matthu about the graphs but also agree with Neil McEvoy. It was surprisingly balanced for the BBC. That said, they'll claim that by giving you a few seconds airtime they're giving balanced coverage to all arguments. Let's just rejoice in the knowledge that not long ago the Bish wouldn't have been allowed anywhere near the 6 o'clock news. I suspect (hope) that the chickens might just be coming home to roost for Lord Patten and other fat cats at the BBC.

Sep 23, 2013 at 7:19 PM | Unregistered CommenterJockdownsouth

Well done Bishop! Most fitting that Fiona Bruce was the news anchor introducing it ('Fiona Bruce, normally the most courteous of broadcasters, called me a “flat-earther” to my face.' - Ann Widdicombe).

And further, as Ann Widdecombe said in the Express,

'Dissenters must not be heard and global warming became a religion. Well the dissenters have now been proved right. Heaven knows how many billions of pounds later the world is now being told that actually the warming is so far off predictions that all bets are off and indeed the world’s temperature is static or falling. So all those wind farms were in vain, as were all those expensive carbon-saving measures inflicted on industry and passed on in costs to you and me.

If I could tell that from the published Hadley Centre figures, the scientists must have known for years yet only now do they admit it. Why?

Heaven forbid that it should be because of all that money tied up in their research.'

Without wishing to be too pessimistic, I reckon the BBC is likely to spin your appearance by describing you as 'a blogger who runs a site sceptical of the orthodox science'

It was very similar to that. Good guess but not difficult. Humans are still definitely causing global warming and it is hidden in the oceans as a 1/100 °C rise which will heat the atmosphere by 10s of °C.

Sep 23, 2013 at 7:41 PM | Registered CommenterPharos

Amazing how scientists are 'baffled' by the lack of warming for 15 years, that they 'struggle' to explain....but then assert with greater confidence than ever that the missing heat is probably in the ocean - and man made warming is definitely causing global warming.

Count me as sceptical.

Assertions, guesses, projections, but cut through the propaganda and they're quite clearly desperately grubbing around for anything that can stave off the pause long enough to see a return of even the slightest warming.

Their theory is on life support. They know it. They're worried.
