Green propaganda can be dangerous

Via Barry Woods comes this story from Sail-World.com. It seems that a number of yachts have been attempting the North West Passage, no doubt some of them with a view to "raising awareness of global warming", but have come unstuck as this year's melt has been much smaller than expected freeze has come early.

The Northwest Passage after decades of so-called global warming has a dramatic 60% more Arctic ice this year than at the same time last year. The future dreams of dozens of adventurous sailors are now threatened. A scattering of yachts attempting the legendary Passage are caught by the ice, which has now become blocked at both ends and the transit season may be ending early.

Apparently there is a cruise ship which may be in need of assistance too. Disturbingly, nobody seems to be quite sure if there is an icebreaker in the vicinity.

Read the whole thing.

Recent research proves that 97% of people who believe in Global Warming get stupider as a result.

The other 3%'were dumb as lamp posts to begin with.

The boys in the row boat are living proof.

The text of the second update, the 'mainstream' expedition, is well worth reading in full.
A great example of climate activist doublethink.

One thing I find particularly irritating with the article is the lat/long reference (73.7880535N, -89.2529297W); surely -89W is 89E? Also, the pedantic repetition of (I assume) the GPS-provided co-ordinates – accurate down to less than half a centimetre accuracy. Oh, yes – must be right – the machine sez so!

Twenty years ago two firnds of mine, mad keen sailors both, ran the passage sucessfully on a Hobie Cat.

I see the maximum draft has gone up a notch since then, Russian tans- arctic transit ship permits for this season numbering in the hundreds with combined tonnage in the millions and operations <I>without icebrakers expected well into october.

"A gaggle of jet skiers?" --sHx

A gurgle, perhaps? Gaggle is for geese. Oh, wait...

Russel says:

"without icebrakers expected well into october."

I suppose they will be flapping their wings to get across the icefield west of Severnaya Zemlya?

"Russian tansarctic transit ship permits for this season numbering in the hundreds with combined tonnage in the millions "

Still some way to go to the peak volume of 6.6 million tons that went through in 1987.

How about a shower of jet-skiers?

A spray of jet-skiers?

withdrawn - doesn't meet standard set above for group name for jet-skiers

A god-awful racket of jet-skiers?
An ear-shattering row of jet-skiers?
It reminds me of those hardy types climbing Mount Everest who must curse those people attempting to fly over the peak on motorised hang-gliders. We get them over our house - you can hear them from miles away and then they takes ages to come over and eventually the bloody noise recedes into the distance. One of my bete-noirs, noise pollution.

Apparant sea level rise or drop due to isostatic rebound effects should be added or subtracted as appropriate. from sea level rise due to melting and temperature changes. I'll do you the courtesy of assuming you know that and are being ironic, rather than displaying your ignorance.

Similarly I presume you are aware that water has a much higher heat capacity than air, and a correspondingly higher thermal inertia.

Yes and quite possibly (thanks for the compliment), but how was/is the difference calculated pre and post satellite? When you say apparent is that a real or imaginary sealevel rise?
Not that I agree with this Not sure about this

Yes but do Trenberth and climate models?

I think this is the news that the groaniad and BBC has been desperately seeking. These outlets have already incorrectly announced finding people who are displaced by climate change; each goofup was documented by a broadcast and news columns with many piteous alarmist claims about more displacement to come. Every announcement to date has been demonstrated and documented wrong; that is, till now.

The very first Climate Change refugees are those silly blokes playing Northwest Passage adventurers. The mental jetski faithful even blamed the ice up on global warming. If anyone is a climate change refugee, these people surely are.

Perhaps we need to set up a donate button? Can we donate half penny's still? Something to help the poor sufferers buy tissues and unsweetened cold medicine... Maybe cold remedy stuff based on emulsified seal blubber and squid ink so it is resistant to freezing? Rub it on, swallow tablespoonfuls, even cook with it! (Wasn't this remedy in the climategaffe emails?

If we start now, we should be able to get them some assistance by 2020.

If you haven't figured it out already; /sarcasm.
