I was watching last night and was half expecting Bishop Hill to be mentioned or Josh's Яoyal Societski to appear. Next time I'm sure.
Gosh, Jo Brand! How refreshing to see her and her Herculean comedy talent cluttering up the BBC 'comedy' channels.
Not.
In the 60's I recall that members of the Institute of Physics voted against honorary membership of the IOP for Prince Philip.
He was not best pleased.
So no Royal IOP unlike the more compliant RIC (Royal Institute of Chemistry)
After that infamous intercepted telephone call, he was referred to here in Aust as the guy who wanted to be in the right place at the wrong time. Is history repeating itself with this appointment?
"I'm fat, I'm ugly and I like cake!"
Thought it might be helpful to summarise Jo Brand's career for any that don't know her. Her lifetime of "jokes" are contained in that sentence. She was also one of the snitchers (with Adrian Chiles) that got Carol Thatcher fired from the One Show for comments said off screen. Ghastly woman.
Yet another example of how being "right-on" can get you a long lucrative career within the Beeb despite lacking any discernible talent. Mind you she's not as bad as Brigstocke or Jupitus.
Hislop criticizing a Royal? Whatever next. If he is not careful he will be offered the editorship of a former cutting edge satirical magazine........
Ivor Ward
I must still be tired. As soon as this page came up, the first thought that came to mind was one of your nation's puppet shows.... like Captain Scarlet.
Seriously.
I didn't know you watch soaps.
147 voted yes, 1128 abstained.........
Hmmmmm, now why does 97% of scientists come to mind?
Quite right SimonW! I can sit and watch HIGNFY now and not even raise a smile. The level of humour has dropped. Perhpas all those lefties have managed to nationalise humour so that it is at once, accessible and multi-cultural...NAH! It's just all crap these days and you can see Merton is just going through the motions and taking the money. Shame, really.
SimonW - you left out the bit about psychiatric nursing, which JB rarely does
Perhaps I should go and sit on the naughty step. I like Jo Brand.
HIGNFY, on the other hand, got smug about 20 years ago. Smug isn't funny to me.
O.T. but for the benefit of American viewers: that noise following the humorous comments is called "spontaneous laughter." It's our equivalent of your clapping and going "Woooooooooo!" in a silly high-pitched voice.
Sorry. Carry on.
I think Prince Philip would make an excellent Fellow.

He already does.
By the way, seeing as it is The Royal Society, isn't having royal princes as fellows just a case of 'my bat, my ball - do as I say or I'm taking them home'?
