Unfortunately I have to wait until April to read the book (my wife has already ordered a copy for my birthday). I like what I'm hearing about it. At this st(age), I never thought I'd be looking forward to a birthday.
I had a friend send me the book from England as, at the time, “The Hockey Stick Illusion” was not available here in the US. It now is available here from Amazon.com, where you will see that all the reviews have given the book five stars.
It was everything that I had hoped for and I was very impressed indeed with Mr. Montford’s ability to excavate all the data, assemble it in chronological order, interpret it and yet make it as readable as a detective novel. The book provides a fascinating view of how Climatology science went wrong and how the major players then dug themselves deeper in a hole of their own making. I wonder if it would have happened if there had been a few skeptical voices around in their group, or whether you had to be a believer in order to join it.
Anyway, the book is a damned good read and the best I have ever read about an evolving science.
I have to say your Bishopness, it was a darn fine read and even someone like myself who has no scientific training, I could follow it. I am relatively new to this climate science lark, which I came to through my unhealthy obsession with the weather, (could be just an English thing, we do like to talk about the weather!) and it was good to read the full story about the creation and debunking of the hockeystick. I pre-ordered the book back in November and it felt like an enternity before it arrived, but like the saying goes 'the best things come to those who wait'. A pack of Lidls choc chip biscuits are in the post :)
Bish I havent read the book as yet but I have recommended it to my library and will read it after they purchase it.
In the meantime all I can go by are the reviews.
This one criticises your style, says its too technical for the layman at parts, but concludes that after reading even part of the book it seems incredible that Mann's papers could have passed peer review and that a superficial dismissal of the case put forward in the book is not tenable.
Brilliant book, should carry the sub heading, "A lie told often enough becomes truth" (Vladimir Lenin). The scientific community should be ashamed of themselves.

That review is very, ermmmm, German.
