Scrooge was clearly a man before his time - frugal in the extreme, misanthropic and with a carbon footprint smaller than Tiny Tim's.

Too true, and off course don't forget

"if they would rather die than go there, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population"

Where Dickens put this in the mouth of an unfeeling character talking about the unwashed poor and workhouses. We don't have to strain our ears too hard to hear the same sentiment expressed towards people who might not conform to many other random feelgood dictums that are questioned.
