Do CRU have the raw data or not?

AJ Strata has an important post examining the various CRU claims that they have deleted or not deleted the raw data for their temperature index.

Thanks for the link! Good luck with the BBC - should be interesting.

Cheers, AJStrata

I'd love a post on the significance of CRU for the whole process, to be honest, in layman's terms. The counter-attack now suggests that the CRU is just one part of a much larger body of evidence, all in agreement with the hypothesis. I see Real Climate now have a page containing what they say is all of its data, analysis and methods. It's referenced on this story today at slashdot:

Real Climate shilling on Slashdot.

Just a quickee on the missing data. I know it's a labourious job but it would be interesting to go back to various (random even) monitoring stations and collect the data going back as far as is recorded and then comparing that data with that recorded by the cru. That raw data should not differ one iota and if it did then obviously there would be a major problem - A major problelm.

@Lord Helpus, but CRU say that they have no record of the raw data as they received it. They claim to have retained only their adjusted data. I infer from Harry Read Me that they probably have no useful record of the adjustments that they applied nor the justifications for them. Of course, they may be lying -but if not, it is a great scandal. If so, it's a different but great scandal too.

I see what you're saying but the site you linked, the strata-sphere implies that indeed the raw data still exists. If indeed it has been deleted then of course it would still be interesting to see whether Nasa and Noaa raw data corresponds EXACTLY

Where exactly is this "statement on CRU's website" that the Times mentions? They don't link to it and nor, as far as I can see, does anyone else.

See also this link as the CEI alleged data destruction before climategate / swifthack and CRU refuted it then.

Not sure what became of the link there.

Should be:

I have another question.

Did they ever really have it? They were apparently paid millions to collect it, but did they really?

I'm sure they would have collected some low hanging fruit for appearances sake, especially if it "looked good".

I, for one, would like to see some travel records that document all the trips to, say, Bangladesh to get mariners log books, etc.

What I can't help but wonder is whether it is possible to verify the authenticity of any data they release. They originally claimed that the raw data was no longer available, but now insist that it is and will be provided.

How can any data they release be trusted unless it is possible to somehow verify that it is genuine and not altered or modified.

I wouldn't be surprised if the "raw data" (without adjustment/correction) they release matches exactly with the "adjusted" data they have used for all of their reports.
