BBC are now carrying a puff piece from the Hadley Centre confirming the security breach, but of course not mentioning the explosive nature of the purported emails.

I see the BBC's Richard Black gets mentioned by Dr. Mann:

...extremely disappointing to see something like this appear on BBC. its particularly odd, since climate is usually Richard Black’s beat at BBC (and he does a great job).
...We may do something about this on RealClimate, but meanwhile it might be appropriate for the Met Office to have a say about this, I might ask Richard Black what’s up here?

Oh I think its is clear that this is geniune (or at least mostly genuine). It is quite possible that someone has stuck in a few ringers but my guess is that someone simply got access to Phil Jones' computer and copied a bunch of relevant stuff.

There's fortran code (and comments on it) which I'm sure are real. There's referee comments on various papers and all those juicy emails (which I suspect are just one folder of his email account but could be a search from a central server).

Also RealClimate confirms its authenticity. And the try som pretty feeble damage control:

The Hackers spook about “ a random selection" when they dropped their link at: http://noconsensus.wordpress.com/2009/11/13/open-letter/
We feel that climate science is, in the current situation, too important to be kept under wraps. We hereby release a random selection of correspondence, code, and documents. Hopefully it will give some insight into the science and the people behind it. This is a limited time offer, download now: (Greetings from Russia - http://ftp.tomcity.ru - ULR no longer works) .
Is there more to come?

So,
CRU v http://www.petitionproject.org/

CRU are a JOKE!

Harrabin. He's a corrupt, lazy, hack journo. Remember his discraceful behaviour with Jo Abbess, who bragged on the internet about getting Harrabin to change an already published story on the BBC about WMO advising of a plateau in the warming trend. This guy needs to be held to account.

Your amazing work is much appreciated. The summary of CRU e-mails is very useful. So quick.

New Zealand investigative journalist Ian Wishart, author of a fabulous book entitled 'Air Con' confirmed authenticity of e-mails yesterday by personally interviewing Prof Phil Jones. You can check here: http://www.investigatemagazine.com/australia/latestissue.pdf

The news is also mostly shut-out of the mainstream media in the U. S. thus far, but Rush Limbaugh talked about it on Friday, so off we go on the internet, thankfully, as it should be obvious to almost everybody that any significant global warming is due to increased solar activity, and with such global warming, the increased evaporation off the ocean for greater cloudcover serves to negate some of the heating, hydrology 101.
