I can't understand why the likes of Ekins aren't caught in the interviewing equivalent of a Knight-Fork. I listening whilst watching BFMTV with the sound off. He claimed that
1. The cost of renewables are falling rapidly,
2. The reduced subsidies were costing jobs
As the interviewer pointed out, subsidies are paid by consumers but failed to follow up with if 1 is true then 2 shouldn't be a problem, and push the point hard. Eventually with enough digging one of these people will admit on air that without subsidies these renewables are not viable.

The other point which went by unchallenged was that these gas power stations would only be needed for a few weeks per year.
Follow-up questions - exactly how many weeks, what time of year and how will we avoid weeks of power cuts.

mendacious Green Party creep Tony Clarke lies his face off attacking oil company and BBC offers lame explanation for takedown of interview.

I agree about use of the phrase "hard-working families" - drives me nuts too.

Ekins is another BBC useful idiot - wheeled out to spout BBC garbage. He is an economist who should be sent home to read David MavKay's book 'Sustainable energy - without the hot air' and then he should be sent out from his ivory tower into the real world and then explain to us how you can run a stable grid without synchronous baseload and despatchable load-follow plants forming the massive majority of the generation. I expect anything technological is beyond his understanding.

Prof Paul Ekins seems to put his mouth where his money is and expects us to join in the complaining about him investing his time , and no doubt finances, in the green blob bubble.

Ambers done something right ..cos greens are angry
They are tweeting things like "and where will the gas come from? Russia and the Middle East :("
...........hmmm is there another place where we can find gas ? ...Frack-on

"but it will expose bill payers to gas price volatility" ..whereas with solar/wind you are locked into high prices with no prospect of it falling

Actually only handful of tweets against Ekins
but lots of ranty green pro tweets ..guess from subsidy biz and PR agencies..not much from real people
......................................................
Now on LBC : Gov advert for biz initiative "In Spain right now they are looking for UK made, electric powered recycling trucks...opportunity could be yours"
... that's taxpayer paid green brainwashing

And while I am still fuming, this sort of comment from politicians and the over-worked phrase " hard-working families" gets up my nose.

"I am determined to ensure that the UK has secure, affordable, and clean energy supplies that hardworking families and businesses can rely on now and in the future"

So as I am retired and, to her mind, no longer hard-working or part of business, it is fine with Amber Rudd if I don't have reliable energy supplies in the future.

You're welcome.

The free rein interview on Today with Prof Paul Ekins has to be heard to be believed- As others have remarked already, he thinks renewables are the way to go, getting cheaper all the time, terribly popular, and we only need a couple of GP power stations to work for a month or two a year as back up for all that lovely on-shore wind.

Does Amber Rudd really believe we can close coal power down by 2025?

Amber Rudd coming at 7:50am on R4Today
To scuttle her Greenblob/BBC arranged to have green nutcase Paul Ekins ( professor of Resources and Environmental Policy at UCL.) on before hand 7.22am
He opened by expressing exasperation that the government "rejecting the cheapest forms of energy ...onshore wind and solar" LOL
"Gas plants that will only bed on a few times a year".."cos renewables can supply"

Here is the Government announcement:

The Government has announced plans to close all unabated coal-fired power stations by 2025 and restrict their use by 2023.

Announcing the decision ahead of a major speech this morning which will set out a new direction for energy policy which has energy security at the heart of it and delivers for families and businesses, Energy and Climate Change Secretary Amber Rudd said:
“Energy security comes first and I am determined to ensure that the UK has secure, affordable, and clean energy supplies that hardworking families and businesses can rely on now and in the future.
“We are tackling a legacy of underinvestment and ageing power stations which we need to replace with alternatives that are reliable, good value for money, and help to reduce our emissions.
“It cannot be satisfactory for an advanced economy like the UK to be relying on polluting, carbon intensive 50-year-old coal-fired power stations.
“Let me be clear: this is not the future.
“We need to build a new energy infrastructure, fit for the 21st century.
“Our determination to cut carbon emissions as cost effectively as possible is crystal clear and this step will make us one of the first developed countries to commit to taking coal off our system”.

and Government announces plans to close coal power stations by 2025
Also:
There will be a consultation in spring 2016 on when to close all unabated coal-fired power stations. The consultation will set out proposals to close unabated coal-fired power stations by 2025 - and restrict use from 2023.
