The team, which is led by first author Richard Betts of the U.K. Met Office's Hadley Center, says that this year will also bring the largest jump in average yearly atmospheric concentrations on record, with a rise of 3.15 parts per million (ppm). During the last major El Niño, however, in 1997-8, the concentrations rose only 2.9 ppm from the previous year's average.
................
However, the current 400 ppm level is not unprecedented in the Earth's history. Scientists believe that the Earth's atmosphere was regularly 360 to 400 ppm three million years ago during the mid-Pliocene era. At that time, water levels were 50 to 80 feet higher than they currently are. Current sea levels have been at a sharp rate of increase, rising an an unprecedented rate of 0.12 inches per year, compared to a sea level that was basically flatlined between 0 AD and 1900.

I do wonder what Muslim immigrants do in northern areas of Scandinavia when Ramadan falls in summer.

@Golf There is a real world, but 97% of the world believes with certainty in things they cannot not have proper evidence for.
The world seems barking mad
Like here I am in suburbs where these days most people seem not to be even drinking water for the whole daylight hours cos now it's Ramadam here
It never hit me that people weremn't even drinking water .. in the past it seemed more of a thing for spiritual Muslims and no one saw that you were eating etc. but now social media means that there is more pressure on Cultural Muslims to conform etc.
Jeez OK give up meat for a few days ..even fast for a day or so but not drinking water that sounds like it would have major negatives outweighing the benefits ..bet people over compensate and over eat etc.
But sure as anything in these Politically dominated Muslim countries 97% of doctors keep their heads down.

SandyS, I am not a student of military history either, but the links between seafaring skills/technology and history interest me.

I have previously understood that the Royal Navy did not see any potential threats from the US or Russians in the Pacific, and the IJN was another natural ally, to be assisted, until about 1930 ish

97% of Climate Scientists agree with Group Think. Australians have repeatedly falsfied evidence to prove this conclusively.

Is Flannery the most highly paid Government employee, with a track record of being 97% wrong?

Pcar
The RN changed to vertical funnels on its ships in the late 1930s, mainly cruisers, as the inclined ones on the inter-war vessels made it obvious which direction the ship was going whether or not it was camouflaged.

I'm not a great student of WWI, but I know there was some Cooperation between the RN and IJN. There was a Japanese destroyer flotilla in the Mediterranean and they patrolled in the Indian Ocean at the request of the UK, an argument can be made that without Japanese assistance Great Britain would have lost control of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The RN suffered a major naval defeat at the hands of Admiral Graf Spee at Coronel in late 1914. After the removal of German warships they used disguised merchant raiders

After the war Japan hoped to gain the German Pacific colonies as a reward for their help. The fact that they didn't, coupled with naval treaty restrictions they thought unfair, is said to be factor in their subsequent move into militarism and hostility to the USA and UK. Not that they didn't already want a Pacific empire, but it had an influence on their approach to gaining one.

It's all interesting and not irrelevant today.

"Mounties said for the first time Tuesday the Fort McMurray wildfire was “most likely the result of human activity” and is now asking the public for assistance as they investigate what caused the massive blaze."
