re:20mph

just up the road in Bristol the sanctimonious posturing and censorious attitude against/towards motor vehicles continues apace from a decidedly low browed bunch of Corbynistas - and speaking of the great man himself - his local council - Islington must have spent a simply enormous amount of money on supplementary signage to rub in the "20's plenty" message... it's everywhere.

Good to see another council admitting their "think of the children policy was wrong.

The streets where more people died after 20mph limit came in - but councillors say it's too expensive to revert back to 30mph

Bath and North East Somerset Council spent £871,000 bringing in 13 of the zones. However a report has found that the rate of people killed or seriously injured went up in seven out of the 13 areas in the 12 months after they were installed.
...The report published by the council claims the findings reflect a national trend.

Manchester admitted same about six months ago.

The unwanted "Roman Empire" mass migrations of the past thing works a whole lot better if there is an existential threat to the migrant's existence - which - let's face it - simply isn't the case with most of the ones we're seeing who pony up surprising amounts of money to get in and get their knees under the table.

The recent boom in migrants is simply because they know they'll get away with it. They'll end up with a life that's better than the one they left but not as good as they dream of. Their kids will not know that they're better off but will know that they're amongst the poorest if only because of their recent step onto the wealth ladder and will resent their lot. Their grievances will be fed by moaning liberals. Eventually some of them will want to take what they've been convinced they're owed.

The only way to convince them that they shouldn't come is to not let a single one stay. Even refugees should be only given a leave to stay until their countries are no longer at war and/or they commit a serious crime.

Making the developing world more attractive?

It strikes me that the Chinese find it quite attractive (as do I wrt some countries) Pakistan looks like it might have an immigration problem - more HERE

Africa would be OK if it weren't for the sh1ts running most of it - but the Chinese are busying themselves paying small bribes an the way to making significant inroads there too.

Historically very few mass migrations have been stopped. Usually because those migrating had greater numbers, better technology and were better organised than the populations already in place, if there was an existing population at all. Nor have many migrants ever "gone back". There hasn't really been a period in human history when there hasn't been a mass migration going on somewhere globally.

So what Dimitris Avramopoulos is saying is backed by history, where you and I might want to disagree with him is that it is inevitable that the current migration into Europe is unstoppable. The coming financial demise of the EU and Europe will make it less attractive to economic migration, how you make non-financial physical barriers work is complex and liable to unexpected breaches as the Romans discovered when the Vandals, Alans and others crossed a frozen Rhine in the early 5th century, and the Vandals then took a circuitous route to sack Rome 50 years later. Wealth leads to reasonably stable populations, apart from "brain drain" issues, so my take is the only way to go is to encourage wealth creation in the developing world, but I can't see that happening any time soon as exploitation is more usual

Pg 3 Times : Greenvert : Ditch teabags to save the planet.
"Most people don't even know they contain plastic"
Well that's cos they don't except a coating to glue the seal , so its not going to make a difference to your compost.

Yorkshire Post claims : "£271m worth of green house gas savings" by electrifying Sheffield to London line", DfT numbers. (20 times more than another forecast)"

Well you could theoretically get electric over diesel EFFICIENCY savings..but GHG saving is a different thing.
