Environmentalism brings you forest clear-cutting

Thanks to the efforts of environmentalists such as Friends of the Earth and WWF, forests in the southern USA are being clearcut in an effort to meet European demand for wood pellets - a demand that has been driven by biomass power generation.

FYI, at least for Alabama. Pine trees here are farmed. They get planted then cut 20 to 30 years later. It is a big business here and has been since the 60s/70s. The 'forests' don't get clear-cut. Those have the occasional thinning and prescribed burns.
