Double or quits

Anthony reports that Michael Mann has come over all legal, filing a suit for libel against the National Review online and the Competitive Enterprise Institute. And as he correctly notes, the process of legal discovery of documents should be interesting.

The Hockey Stick Story never seems to end, does it?

The Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1998. That is why I chose that year. In 2008, oil was 10 times more expensive than 1998. Maggi Fatcha did not change her views on AGW. She doesn't have opinions. She is a politician. She is owned by her American handlers (Murdoch when she was in power) . She is right wing so she must be seen to be against AGW now.

In my opinion, Fatcha destroyed this country and built a criminal offshore arm of Wall Street in its place.

I want to make it clear that I believe the reason for these law suits is purely political. To expose Mann's opponents as holding views that the majority of Americans would have contempt for.

You're cracking me up. Or are you one of Scargill's kids?

The choice of judge for this action doesn`t look so good

i.e. biassed in his favour

Steyn points out that if Mann is a Peace Prize winner then members of the EU are also Peace Prize winners. Perhaps we all should all use it.

TinyCO2 Nobel Award Winner LOL

The complaint stems from 2 points, fraudulent hockey stick and manipulated data to hide the BLADE.
Also a comparison to Jerry Sandusky, which CEI changed as inappropriate, then complaining that NRO reran it after CEI dropped the line, and that DC court has jurisdiction because Canadian Steyn's comments would be seen there. Hasn't he just sued Tim Ball in Canada?

They define hockey stick as 1998 and 1999 charts, but NRO could go an easier path and just refer to Mann et al in Nature and Science 2008/2009. Arthur Smith has already run on his blog proof that Mann is a fraud, though he stopped consideration just before he could reach a conclusion.

Hide the decline covers the manipulation of the blade.

I think NRO is on firm ground claiming truth as a defense rather than public figure or no knowing lies.

Sounds like another book for Bishop Hill. Inherit the Wind Farm is taken, but I'm sure you can come up with something good. God and Mann at Yale.

Based on criterion used by Mann in his complaint, Steyn is now claiming that he also is a Nobel Peace Prize Winner:

Mann and his delusions of (the) grandeur (of his hockey stick). The gift that keeps on giving. As I have just posted at WUWT wrt to his claim to have been "awarded the Nobel Peace Prize" for "his research" ...

=======
It would seem that when it comes to depicting “proxies” and “principal component analysis” of Nobel Peace Prize awards, Mann’s comprehension is as profoundly challenged as it appears to be whenever he attempts to engage in statistical analysis.

Bristlecone pine or brittle-tone whine … It’s all the same to him, evidently: Whatever he claims must be true, simply Because! Mann! Says! So!
=======

As each day passes (and each of Mann's wild claims surpasses the last), it occurs to me that Mann has far more in common with David <I see you, I sue you> Irving (Holocaust denier par excellence and failed launcher of libel suits intended to silence his critics) than he will ever know (or acknowledge!)

I think that Mann is correct. He is a Nobel laureate... leave the poor guy alone.

Because that makes me one also, and also a fair proportion of the site contributors...

Why? The EU just got the Nobel Prize :)

J.Cricket Nobel Laureate... I am getting the cards printed as I write.

Alas, I fear you have succumbed to the Mann-induced rampant virus of post-Nobel laureatism.

IOW ... it's worse than we thought;-)

Oct 25, 2012 at 8:30 AM | Registered CommenterHilary Ostrov

Hilary, I am infected, but it is a pure EU sourced virus i.e. it is over complicated, effects the lives of millions negatively, comes up with remedies that only make things worse. But still the EU so still makes me a Laureate.

Anyway, I believe you are just a jealous Dominionite... not to have been Nobel glorified ...

Mark Steyn takes his eye off the US election for a moment to deliver some fun in response to the Mann suit:

"I’m still working on my formal, bland, carefully lawyered official response, so for now just let me do cheap ad hominem cracks."

It really is remarkable that Mann allows himself to be billed as a Nobel Laureate in the litigation papers themselves. It certainly reflects badly on his integrity and reputation for accuracy - which is really what the case is about...

It is quite another to attempt to discredit consistently validated scientific research through the professional and personal defamation of a Nobel prize recipient

from Michael Mann's complaint letter

Is this for real?

Mann is unlikely to enter battle unless he's rigged the field, so these sorts of remonstrations may just be false flags. (Or he may be building his case thereby that his Nobel prize winning stellar reputation has been harmed?)

Who knows, with this guy?

As a keen cyclist, I keep finding parallels to the unravelling of life of Lance Armstrong.

The two modus operandi (and personalities) seem to be similar.

Oct 25, 2012 at 11:27 AM | Unregistered CommenterJiminy Cricket

I don't think anyone has really divined what is the real point behind Mann's suit. I think the point is just to intimidate other sceptics into keeping quiet. This suit will get stalled just like his suit against Tim Ball, but it will make this point to other sceptics: keep quiet about me unless you have deep pockets and a lot of time to spare.

Uri Geller used this tactic all the time -- he was constantly suing high-profile sceptics in order to intimidate all his critics. Kept him going for years and years.

Not saying that this tactic is necessarily going to work in Mann's case, though, but I think that's the motivation behind it.

Is there a rule that says material requested in a court case cannot be released through a separate FOI request?

Wow!? I had glanced through that pile of whining nauseating hubris and had totally missed that "Nobel prize recipient" gem!

It’s beyond belief isn't it?

I know nothing of the law here or the US, but I guess Mann must have *some* sane legal advice given to him, so I can only assume there is some device or “trick” being worked here to distract people away from a small nugget in the complaint where he might have a case? Maybe he and his team assume that by dousing the defendants with so much nauseating, laughable posturing they may miss it? ;)

Mann does seem a strange person.

I have to add via following the Mark Steyn article here

I was reminded that Monckton at one time had the same Nobel laureate claim attached to himself and in this article a representative of the Nobel committe is quoted:

Committee secretary Geir Lundestat had never heard of Lord Monckton. I emailed him the Monckton website.

“The claim is ridiculous,” said Lundestat. “He is not a laureate - no way, no way.”

Thousands of people, he said, participated in the program of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which shared the 2007 prize with Al Gore.

“But the organisation won the prize. Not even Dr Rajendra Pachauri(the chair of the IPCC) is an individual laureate.”

No individual, no matter what their involvement with the IPCC, can pass themselves off an a Nobel Laureate.

My emphasis above.

So a pretty strong case that Mann is using the "recipient" claim in a bogus way to big himself up. Seems insecure behaviour to me.

I don't think there is any risk that Mann does this for a joke? ;)

Yep. The guy is very strange.

More from Geir Lundestad H/T Tom Nelson http://tomnelson.blogspot.co.uk/

Professor Mann claims to win Nobel Prize; Nobel Committee says he has not! -
Boston environmental policy | Examiner.com

Geir Lundestad, Director, Professor, ofThe Norwegian Nobel Institute emailed me back with the following:

1) Michael Mann has never been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
2) He did not receive any personal certificate. He has taken the diploma awarded in 2007 to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (and to Al Gore) and made his own text underneath this authentic-looking diploma.
3) The text underneath the diploma is entirely his own. We issued only the diploma to the IPCC as such. No individuals on the IPCC side received anything in 2007.

Lundestad goes on to say that, "Unfortunately we often experience that members of organizations that have indeed been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize issue various forms of personal diplomas to indicate that they personally have received the Nobel Peace Prize. They have not."

Thanks Messenger, someone has an ego problem me thinks...

"Unfortunately we often experience that members of organizations that have indeed been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize issue various forms of personal diplomas to indicate that they personally have received the Nobel Peace Prize. They have not."

Ouch. It makes Mann sound slightly sad and pathetic.

Ps. My EU Nobel Prize derived diploma is freshly composed in Gimp...

Oct 26, 2012 at 4:28 PM | Unregistered CommenterJiminy Cricket

Thanks messenger so the same guy who smacked down Monckton's pretensions does the same to Mann eh?

Professor Mann claims to win Nobel Prize; Nobel Committee says he has not

Also that other sane IPCC contributor Lenny Bernstein

On Winning the Nobel Prize

the way Bernstein writes and makes a joke of the whole idea in a pretty human and unpretentious way makes one wonder...surely any other sane people who worked at the IPCC must think Mann and Trenberth (are there others?) posturing as recipients or laureates are just making a laughing stock of themselves?

They are comedy buffoons.

How is it Mann thinks this is worth claiming in such a ridiculously hubristic way?

I really think he is strange.
