Barroso then and now

The EU seems to have seen the writing on the wall and is starting to beat a retreat from its previous environmentalist-friendly policies:

If European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has his way, the European Union would do away with its green energy mandate and replace it with a voluntary system in which EU member states set their own renewable energy targets as they see fit.

German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung on Wednesday reported that Barroso is pushing for an end to EU renewable energy mandates when the current legally binding target expires in 2020.

How times change. Here is Senor Barroso just a couple of years ago:

José Manuel Barroso, the commission president, expressed confidence that renewables would move from an alternative form of energy to the mainstream over the next decade. “I believe renewable energy is neither a luxury nor a distraction,” Mr Barroso said.

Is this the same President Jose Manuel Barroso who argued with Farage about AGW last year. Didn't he try and quote the 97% (but actually said 99%) of scientists believe in AGW.

As the renewbles train crash gets into full momentum in the next couple of years we might see more of this back peddling.

Instead of people like David Attenborough and Richard Muller pretending to have been sceptics in the past, we might see "converts" coming the other way now.

CharmingQuark: it’s “back-pedalling”. You may be peddling your wares, but they cannot be back-peddled; that would be known as “refunding”.

As much as one would like to think that Borroso wants to reduce the harm caused by the EU's CC targets, we must remember that he is soon to be replaced as President of the Council, and the man hoping to do that is the German, Schultz (sp). He could be heard on Toady this morning being interviewed about how he would make the EU more relevant to Euro sceptics all over Europe. He specifically mentioned CC as one of his goals to concentrate on. As it happens, he turned out to be a nasty piece of work as the poor interviewer couldn't get a word in edgways as he just kept talking over her. If you look at the vid of Farage linked in a comment on this thread, at about 1:56 you'll get a good pic of the man. He worries the hell out of me.....

Harry Passfield - just looked up Martin Shultz on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Schulz and I tend to agree with you. A bookseller by trade, and an unkind comment about his financial ability when Mayor of his town, amongst other things. Given all the political wrangling that obviously has gone on to get him in place, the thought of Camoron negotiating a new deal for the UK (or England and Wales and NI as we might be by then) seems somewhat remote. I wonder what Merkel thinks of him?

The comments at the end of this post are amusing; someone even thinks Tony Blair would be a good president..........

Don't believe it. Barrosa is an old portugais Maoist. He likes and wants control. What he will do is an Obama. He will tell his commisariat to enforce co² rules via regulation. That's why he is telling the UK to stop subsidising green energy. It will push the price of energy in the UK ever higher until their industry leaves for china and thei people can no longer buy energy. Job done.
Their latest stupidity is to ban cannelle (sorry can't think of the english at this moment. It's a spice) or at least force the danes to reduce how much they use in their 'danish' pastry.

'Voluntary'..?

'VOLUNTARY'..??

Surely this cannot be the same EU we know and love - you know, the one which says: 'What the EU says goes; do not argue; resistance is futile'..?

As Sean Connery might say: 'Shurely shome mishtake...'

Heh, Mike and Stephen. I've long considered that cinnamon actually has a stealth minimum daily requirement. Think of all the people who get their daily dose.

See Figueres' latest; coming to the EU at a venue near you.

I think maybe Baroso has taken his eye off the renewable debate. 'Why?' you may ask.

Because he is preoccupied at the moment using scare tactics accusing the UK of using scare tactics by demanding reform of the Gravy Train.

If we stop green subsidies, won't the price of fuel fall?

"David Attenborough and Richard Muller pretending to have been sceptics.."

Richard Muller is named as a convert to full warmism in The Science of Discworld 4, Terry Pratchett's co authors are Ian Stewart and Jack Cohen.

Is there proof about Muller's fake conversion?

Barroso clearly has a job lined up at Total or Repsol, neither of which have embraced the green theme taken up by the anglophone oilers.

It's quite surprising, with the level of cynicism held by the great unwashed of the powers that be, that more hasn't happened yet to displace them. I can only agree with FarleyR that the people who can detect the level of merde coming out of the political class are regrettably too busy to do to much about it, whilst the idle - either because they're reaping benefits or FIT benefits - do precisely nothing.

I'm going to a UKIP selection meeting on Saturday. About the best I'm doing, to be fair. But I will try and make energy bills, and the reason for them being so high, a key factor for any of the prospective candidates.
