Subsidy Sam - the book!

As readers might recall I drew a cartoon for anti-wind campaigner Lyndsey Ward whose story 'Subsidy Sam' was in the news back in April.

I have now completed all the other illustrations for her story and put them all into a book format which is free to download via the Cartoons by Josh website.

If you do download the book please think about making a donation - we are hoping to raise enough funds for a second story, 'Timmy the Tiny Turbine', which Lyndsey has written for younger children.

Many thanks!

Lyndsey,
Thank you and Josh for providing a .pdf of the book. The text and illustrations work well.
I enjoyed it, but I would also say that your (justifiable) anger comes through a bit too strong. You have clearly identified the potential for rollicking satire and lambast of the rent seeking corruption behind so-called "green investments". My unsolicited advice would be to sharpen that aspect of your work. It could easily be quite sharp and effective.

Nestle won't have to if we all vote leave tommorrow.
And if Nestle do buy up all the Scottish Wind power next to Trump,s golf Course it's great news for the manufacturers of Desiel Generators

You have picked the more difficult path but most things worth doing are more difficult. Congratulations on voting for your freedom.

Historic vote to recover our national democratic self governance and sovereignty. Utterly magnificent and terrific bonus for Her Majesty, her nation and Commonwealth.

And live with it John Gummer, who just tweeted -

'John Deben ‏@lorddeben · 7h7 hours ago

Off on a week away. Probably no tweets. Sad for my country, its opportunities to do good, and its denial of its real self.

Jun 24, 2016 at 8:45 PM | Registered CommenterPharos

Goodness, never in my most feverish dreams did I ever expect to agree wholeheartedly with a near cretinous (IMO)Tory Lord of the calibre of John Gummer (he of hamburger fame). The earth has shifted on its orbit. I am adrift.

Yes he will have to live with it, as will 48.1% of the voting public.

Lord Gummer +100

Jun 26, 2016 at 7:18 AM | Unregistered CommenterAlan kendall

Also Pharos don't you think it just a teeny weeny bit incongruous to be celebrating regaining our "national democratic self governance" whilst in the very next sentence congratulating an entirely undemocratic institution like the Monarchy in the form of our Queen? Just asking.

Jun 26, 2016 at 7:32 AM | Unregistered CommenterAlan kendall

Alan Kendall, Gummer could have chosen Orwell, not Deben to go to the Lords with.

Jun 26, 2016 at 7:37 AM | Unregistered Commentergolf charlie

golfCharlie. Hardly, Orwell was a died in the wool, rabid socialist. A Tory Lord would not want to be shackled by a name like that. It would be like calling a boy, Sue.

Alan Kendall:

"Yes he will have to live with it, as will 48.1% of the voting public."

As would a similar percentage have had to do if the vote had been the other way. Funny stuff, this democracy business. As some commentators keep saying, don't hold a referendum unless you are sure of the outcome.

Yes dennisa he and I and millions of others not only have to live with it, we also have to endure the near constant jingoistic cacophony of Leaver rants. Funny thing democracy, it throws up all sorts of unexpected consequences. No doubt you will respect the democratic right of the majorities in Scotland and Northern Ireland to follow their wishes? We have had a democratic vote on a subject where we were not given the relevant facts. Who knew the Leave side had no coherent exit strategy, who knew we didn't have the necessary expertise or manpower in the civil service to engage with the EU about the exit. What we did know is that a populist component of the Leave campaign engaged in fostering outright xenophobia to achieve success. Funny old thing, democracy.

Don't like my giving John Gummer +100? Like some too? Here goes

dennisa +100.

There what does it mean? Answer, nothing because you don't respect my opinion.

Alan Kendall: "we also have to endure the near constant jingoistic cacophony of Leaver rants"

Amazing. I have never seen so much vitriol being spewed out as that coming from the Remainers, (not including you).

"We have had a democratic vote on a subject where we were not given the relevant facts."

What do you see as the relevant facts? The facts as I see them are that if we stay in, the EU will continue towards full integration, political and financial, the goal is a United States of Europe. No one gave any relevant facts about the purported benefits of staying in. The EU is tanking and growth is low. It is not xenophobic to be concerned about mass migration on the scale that has taken place across the EU, but anyone expressing their concerns is labelled as bigoted and racist.

"Who knew the Leave side had no coherent exit strategy"

If you want to see a structured exit strategy, I suggest you check out http://www.eureferendum.com/themarketsolution.pdf

Cameron is playing disgraceful games and the Leave Campaign was hi-jacked by chancers, hence the current chaos.

I respect your opinion, I do not have to agree with it any more than you do mine. I guess we will not come to a meeting of minds on this issue.

Jun 26, 2016 at 5:24 PM | Registered Commenterdennisa

dennisa. I disagree. Look at your last two sentences, we agree. I also respect your opinion.

Jun 26, 2016 at 5:59 PM | Unregistered CommenterAlan kendall

Alan. we lost the match 3-2.
They scored two goals in extra time, five minutes of unwarranted extra time. plus the referee disallowed a clear penalty and allowed the other team free reign to perform professional fouls.

I do not respect the other team and I do not respect that referee.
we were the better team and we were robbed

but one thing is for sure

we lost that match 3-2

Jun 27, 2016 at 12:56 AM | Unregistered CommenterEternalOptimist

EO. Yes we lost the game, 3-2, was it in overtime? It was heartbreaking, and when we were favourites too. But unlike some of my fellow supporters I'm not calling the result unfair, and certainly am not asking for a rematch. It's true I don't respect many of the other side's players who played dirty, one in particular. An utter disgrace, he should have been red-carded. But the result stands. Pity about some of their supporters who, after the match, are still questioning our goals and bad mouthing our players, especially our injured captain.

I understand their next opponents play really hard, are much better organized, and may be out for revenge. I also believe our opponents have no real plans for future success. I do wish them well though because they still carry our colours, but I still wish we had won. Cela vie.

Thanks, dennisa, that one link you posted will turn the UK into a paradise again in no time at all while the EU continues its inevitable descent to hell.

Awesome relief.

EO Oh forgot to say, I never saw a referee anywhere. Did the game promoters forget to supply one? Were we even watching the same game?

Jun 27, 2016 at 7:03 AM | Unregistered CommenterAlan kendall

Ayla,

No-one is suggesting any paradise, simply a rational and logical way forward to extricate ourselves from 40 plus years of the EEC/EU with the least pain.

Perhaps you should check out the commentary in this article from Richard North this morning. North knows more about the EU and its workings than anyone commenting here and all those posturing on TV. His knowledge of international law should not be so lightly dismissed.

Rock on, dennisa!!

Your use of the word "simply" makes one feel the magic in the air, particularly as you so skillfully associate it with "rational and logical".

Bob Ward:

“The UK has generally argued for stronger action on emissions within the EU, so its absence will make it more difficult to counter the arguments of those Member States, such as Poland, which want slower and weaker cuts in emissions,” said Bob Ward, policy and communications director of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science."

“UK will not now take part in the sharing out of the EU 2030 target contained in the EU [pledge], and Brexit will likely make it more difficult for the EU to achieve that target as UK has been cutting its emissions by more than the EU average,” Ward said by email."

Phil Jones
The United Kingdom’s vote to leave the European Union could disrupt research as well as commitments to fighting climate change.

“It’s depressing, but the uncertainty doesn’t help,” says Philip Jones, research director of the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit in Norwich, England. “I just hope that science doesn’t get forgotten in all of this.”

Myles Allen
“My main concern in the big picture is potential damage to the U.K.’s reputation as a destination for top-flight researchers,” says Myles Allen of the University of Oxford’s Environmental Change Institute. “Researchers put a lot of emphasis on the ability to recruit and ability to travel, and if these changes affect our ability to recruit the best and brightest of the world’s academics, then we’re in trouble.”

Ability to travel? To and from far away places by aeroplane? Even to climate conferences?

Answers are druid business, so I'll wait to hear what mine has to say on the subject. She's promised to read deep into the entrails of the compost heap.

Hey, btw, are British immigrants being recalled?

There are millions of them just along the Mediterranean coast. It'd be an act of mercy, really, considering that the EU will soon devolve into savagery.

dennisa. You could have done me the kindness of not broadcasting Phil Jones' latest message to the world. After suppressing my gag reflex (with the greatest of difficulty) I even contemplated joining the all powerful and utterly victorious Leavers. But, nah.

Jamspit. Oh what a simply wonderful way of spreading harmony amongst this much divided and suffering country. Helping those 48.1% of our countrymen who had the misfortune to believe in a wider, more cooperative Europe.
I understand they will be seeking border guards now to keep out the unwanted from our pristine shores and expel all the EU trash that are cluttering up our hospitals. You may be suited.

Spreading joy and peace would be better if those who lost also lost the snark and found something more substantive than a menu of sour grapes and content free criticism. There was a case to be made for staying: EU reform, reduction of appointed bureaucracy power, reasonable reform of immigration, etc. Instead the remainers distinguished themselves by embracing anti-democratic governance and insulting those who disagreed with the remainers. Too bad that the anti-freedom minority refuses to seriously consider the concerns of the majority.

And there was me thinking the UK would simply become another Norway.

We get all the trade deals and none of the Brussels Baggage that has blighted every Conservative Party Prime Minister for the last three decades. The Conservatives and Labour must be secretly pleased to be finally rid of Europe.

And unlike Iraq we don't get dragged into another invasion of Ukraine this time by the recently proposed European Union army.
