UaT. In the Game of Thrones saga there are wild desolate islands occupied by the Ironborn - a kingdom of norse-like seafarers. Before the story begins the Ironborn unsuccessfully invaded the mainland that the author acknowledged was based upon Scotland. I was struck by the resemblance to Somerlet, although this resemblance has AFAIK never previously been noted.

It depends on which bit of the UK you're as to what you consider a long way. Although for the majority of UK residents most stuff is fairly close by, easily walkable by 19th century standards. In general it's only when you get north and west of a line from The Severn Estuary to The Wash does 13 miles become not that far for anything. The commute to work perhaps being an exception. I think that is true for most parts of the world that once you leave centres of population the concept of distance changes.

Top 15 climate scientists: consensus and skeptics

"This is rather astonishing, kudos to Best Schools for putting this together.

Best Schools has put together another very interesting list:  Top 15 Climate Change Scientists – Consensus and Skeptics.

Here is the rationale for what they have done:

We are well aware that those who support the mainstream position that anthropogenic climate change represents a grave threat to the future of humanity will deplore our decision to represent both side of the debate (or even to characterize the ongoing discussion as a “debate” at all). They have convinced themselves that only cranks and paid stooges could possibly disagree with them. We see things differently."

The Ten Consensus Scientists, including Hansen, Mann and Jones, and Five Skeptic Scientist are scheduled, in the Linked Article, complete with their "achievements".

I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar with Game of Thrones, not a patch on real events in all likelihood. This is 12th Century Europe when a lot of stuff was being settled, Stephen, Henry II, Richard I and John, in England, House of Canmore taking control in Scotland, Spanish Kingdoms uniting and taking back control from the Moors, Princes of Wales resisting English aggression, Irish Kings resisting English invasion, English and French fighting over who controlled what (a bit of a common thread).

On the other hand the 12th century saw the introduction of the flying buttress and the beginnings of cathedral building and other civic developments.

Interesting times indeed. So Somerled was a minor Prince on the fringes of Europe despite having some local renown.

Thank you for telling us more about you. This is not all about YOU.

Do victims of abuse have different rights to expect justice, depending on THEIR Race, Colour or Creed?

Does it matter whether the abusers were white Irish Catholic Nuns, or retired Majors with double-barreled surnames, impeccable Service Records from their time in the Household Cutlery Regiment, and teaching at an expensive Private Boarding School?

What about Jimmy Saville or Cyril Smith? None of their victims ever saw evidence of UK Justice at work.

" ..... the haggis may go the way of the tufted sporren."

The Highland Haggis, with left legs longer than their right, can only go clockwise around the mountains. Fortunately, Scotland has always demontrated great determinationin in rising, and has shown sea level how it should be done properly. So it seems the Highland Haggis is not destined to wander round in ever decreasing circles, unlike BBC Climate Science Experts, who now need to have them gassed instead.

Using particularly crude and cruel surgical techniques, Joseph Stalin authorised the top secret conspiracy to develop a naturally extreme left leaning haggis, to go anti-clockwise instead The physical appearance was changed, but their instincts were not. Most just walked off the first cliff they encountered, in their confused state of mind, as they did not know which way to go, and could not turn round.

Political Correctness gorn mad!?!? You couldn't make it up.

SG suggest you stop digging. 12 miles is 12 miles separation, different cities, different counties, different ethnic mixes, different sports teams, different newspapers, just about different everything. (even different tectonic plates)..

@ST
Downtown San Francisco to downtown Oakland is 12 miles by car
Downtown San Francisco to downtown Berkeley is 13 miles by car

Downtown Southampton to downtown Cowes is 13 miles BY FERRY
Downtown Southampton to downtown Cowes is 39 miles by the other ferry
In US scales 13 miles is a nothing distance, whereas in UK 13 miles is relatively far
