A few sites I've stumbled across recently....

I'm looking at that Times article again
"Toxic air makes school day a threat to pupils’ health"

First it says
"About 60 per cent of the daily air pollution to which children are exposed in cities occurs at school or on the way to or from it"
"six children from six schools .. pollution monitors for 24 hours and measured the amount of black carbon in the air around them."

Then it says "15 per cent of the children’s daily exposure to black carbon* occurred during school runs, 44 per cent at school, 38 per cent at home "
"Children spend about 30 per cent of their time at school."
OK in that 30% of time kid gets 44% of pollution
whilst their time at home of say 6 hours awake and 10 hours asleep ie 66% of the day gets them 38%
and their time traveling is 6% of the day and gets them 15% of pollution

It's not staggering that you get less pollution at home cos half of it you are asleep in the bedroom

BTWIt then implies that black carbon is deadly
er, no
They seem to be using black carbon to mean PM2.5
those larger pieces of black carbon are less dangerous ..so what are they measuring ?

@TinyCO2 "Since the site's view is that Russia is in the clear"
Is it ? I don't know
I do regard the output of anti-frackers to be like Putin's little helpers
but as ever that is just a scenario that is without proof

I do see a lot of people who seem to defend Russia at all costs
and the same rule of evidence applies to those people
They are wrong to have certainty without evidence.

There are parallels with false-liberals who scream at the west all day as if full of guilt,
whilst not commenting of the anti-green and anti-justice actions of Asia and Russia

Thanks AK and Mark, I appreciate the support and you may have noticed I've been absent from there since about April for the same reason. Each time I considered going back, another post arrived to annoy me and I gave it a bit longer. I deliberately reactivated the item because I wanted to see if logic could trump the West hating clique that had sprung up. I was even dismayed to read some of Steve McIntyre's Twitter posts as he's gone very... Anyway, there has been a strong following of certain sites (including RT) amongst climate sceptics that I want no part of.

Stewgreen, the articles weren't mine, I just reacted to them. I gave myself and others time to rethink our positions. Since the site's view is that Russia is in the clear, even if it's not, I find I have nothing in common with those who hold those views. I agreed that we have to stop being the World's police but asked what event would be enough to trigger our actions. Clearly poisoning 5 people, killing 1 and contaminating a town isn't it for Geoff, Ben and Richard.

stew, you might be right, but the point about the discussion at cliscep is that we sceptics need to be seen to be rational; there is a danger that in being TOO sceptical, doubting and questioning absolutely everything, we look a bit odd, rather than rational. IMO, Tiny's position in the debate was rational and sensible, while some of the other opinions being expressed run the risk of reducing the credibility of the site - though of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, and they may yet turn out to be correct (and our little trio of commentators might be wrong - though I doubt it).

I don't see the point in speculating about Salisbury
It's wasting time going down a rabbithole
It's all "she said he said"
And the fact that spies spy on each other is of no consequence to us.

Tiny, may I second Supertroll's comments. I have observed the debate at the other place, without commenting (yet) with regard to the recent re-activation of the discussion thread in question. I may stir myself from my lethargy, and weigh in on your side, for I am in complete agreement with you over there (as I usually am on most topics).

Tiny. I hope your intended absence from "another place" will be only short lived. I particularly enjoyed our interaction there and you are needed.

It's been being hollowed out for years - the BBC engineering family silver was getting handed out the back door over 10-15 years ago - if I recall correctly the distribution and transmission facilities were transferred for relative peanuts complete with contracts.... many people on the engineering side moved out too... They used to design broadcast equipment and have it built to their specs.

The cult of generalist managerialism and the liberal artsy sociology of victimhood practitioners were glad to see the engineers go I reckon. The unions still must have quite a hold since the BBC jobs I have gotten to see look superficially overstuffed with purportedly overpaid personnel - purely my perception - I might be misjudging on a small sample...

Times has an offer 36 pounds for three months of 7 day print editions
(instead of just 1 month)

To me online is better cos you get comment access
My current promo account runs out in a few weeks so I'll have to find someone to share with.

Toxic air makes school day a threat to pupils’ health
Ben Webster, Environment Editor

Going to school can be worse for children’s health than staying at home because of the amount of toxic air that they breathe during school runs and in playgrounds and classrooms, a study has found.
