More lawyering up

A friend of former FBI director James Comey who leaked sensitive FBI memos to The New York Times in the wake of Comey’s firing in 2017 now claims to be Comey’s personal attorney. Daniel Richman, a law professor at Columbia University, told The Federalist via phone on Tuesday afternoon that he was now personally representing Comey.

This is going to turn into an epic shitfest

He could just be acting as a PR Spokesman for Comey, to prevent him saying anything incriminating. For a Secret Squirrel to require such assistance....

tomo, in Wikipedia, Nuremberg Defense leads to:
Superior orders, often known as the Nuremberg Defense,  or by the German phrase  ("an order is an order"), is a plea in a court of law that a person—whether a member of the military, law enforcement, a firefighting force, or the civilian population—not be held guilty for actions which were ordered by a superior officer or an official.

Alternatively, they could just Conspire, Deny everything, and send for Lewandowsky

I think that those involved are looking at the Obamah IRS business and hoping that's the model that will be used....

I hope their confidence in suffocating process is misplaced big time.

One piece of evidence that's been public for some time and ignored by the MSM

Lawyering up....

Unconfirmed..... and to be treated with *extreme* caution.... as it's a prime fake news tale that the loonier American righties can be expected to shout from the rooftops.

Barack Obamah has retained specialist legal council?

Anyway here's the home page of one guy that you are going to hear quite a bit more about imho.

What's sauce for the goose ought to be sauce for the gander.

The Feds used The Logan Act and went after Mike Flynn for talking to the Russian Ambassador - less so for John Kerry it would seem + odd place to start his 2020 run for the White House.

tomo, I would expect that all former US Presidents have some Taxpayer Funded Legal Advice available to them, which would be independent of the serving President.

If a former President was using Taxpayer Funding to interfere with the Lawful Duties of the serving President, that would be a different matter.

I'm skeptical about Obamah lawyering up - it's hype I think in the 7-10 days process window for the formal procedures required to decide if the FISA memorandum is going to be released - by no means a given at the moment.

Obama seems incapable of stepping out of the limelight...maybe something to do with his legacy slowly being either pulled apart one Executive Order after another OR his actions having light shone on them!

tomo, at least the BBC now admits that there is something to report on. I wonder if the BBC realised that this was a story that they would have to report on eventually, so better to start with damage limitation releases now, rather than wait until their own biased non-reporting became too obvious to ignore.

The piece itself does seem unbiased, if a little low key given the possible implications.

Mailman, why "OR" when "and" could be more appropriate?

I do think that Obama's retirement plans of opening "Charitable Enterprises" and Gold Envelopes at Prize Giving Ceremonies, may not prove quite as lucrative as the Clinton's.

Who chose to ensure that Clinton would follow Obama, and how long ago? Governments of the World, including the UN and EU all assumed that St Hillary only had to stand up, to get elected.

I suspect there's some scrabbling at BBC editorial / management to formulate something, a stance that'll not look awful in hindsight if it goes seriously pear shaped and hoping that their chums will be able to weasel out of it - which they might still do.

I totally expect there's some drafts of internal editorial guidelines that are already working on a McCarthyite persecution angle - ignoring the facts about the FDR administration which had Comintern agents in the Oval Office and littered through other Federal departments.

I wish I could get a bet on about how this is going to play out -> pound to a penny victimhood and noble causes will feature extensively and somehow Trump will be blamed :-)

tomo, Trump has known of this since being told by Admiral Rogers in April 2016. He became President knowing that some of his most senior Government Officials had been trying to obstruct his election. Trump is now enjoying the results of his patience.

The Memo has not been leaked, yet, which is of interest, given the ability of US Secret Squirrels to be so very careful at losing or leaking information that suits them.

Trump will want The Memo released, when it suits him, but he won't want to be seen to be pressuring anyone to do so, unless he is responding to the wishes of Loyal and Patriotic Americans.

Meanwhile, "The Democrats" are in a pickle. Potential candidates for the next Presidential Election, and their potential financial backers, won't want to be tarnished by Team Clinton fall out, especially if any legal proceedings rumble on for 3+ years with fresh revelations.

Further away, Trump is still threatening China with trade sanctions, so China are happy for North Korea to keep threatening Trump. China wants to resolve the North Korean issue, when it suits them.

oops

300 texts a ... day - between Mr. Strzok and Ms. Page - one every two minutes.... intense eh?

It would not surprise me in the slightest if some of the purported "burner" phones have already be ID'd and their calls / data / texts examined and cross referenced.

Jan 25, 2018 at 8:07 PM | Registered Commentertomo

tomo, if those texts were not related to work required by their employers, then it was abuse of Taxpayer funds. Their Line Managers would have to confirm whether the texts were part of their work. This may sound petty and pedantic, but it would mean they could be suspended further to " investigations", which could lead anywhere, or nowhere.

It would also require their Line Managers to make some form of declaration about what their required duties were, and provide proof of who had required them to do what.

Faced with dismissal or being fired, jail, loss of pension etc, some Secret Squirrels may give up a few secrets.

It all hinges on what's discovered in the scoping out and consequent interview process and how far the rot got and I guess who's got the power (and the will) to push it forwards.

It might still come to 'nowt in the public space as happened with the 1933 plot against FDR which was tamped down by the media at the time as I understand it.

The book was out of print for years - but a full text is here for the moment and I'd guess wayback has several copies... Amazon isn't sold out ..... yet

Some information on the investigation didn't get into the public domain until the mid 1960s and it's still got plenty of blanks in the narrative + cast of characters. There's still some contentious discussion around the book - I've read it and followed the arguments and read more - it's clear something happened and it's been covered up.

This is where "Plea Bargaining" becomes very efficient for US Taxpayers. Those facing the biggest penalties, have most to gain by being the first to squeal. Those with lower grade misdemeanours, may want to squeal to protect their otherwise unblemished records, whilst claiming the Nuremberg Defence.

The vast majority of Secret Squirrels will want to avoid their own part of their own institution being labelled as corrupt, unreliable and untrustworthy. It is in Trump's interest for the US Electorate to see that Trump has spotted problems, dealt with them, and restored confidence. Defence Attorneys in unrelated cases can now allege corruption amongst Law Enforcement Officers, and not be laughed out of Court.

It is not in Trump's interest to destroy the Security Services, but he needs to trust them. Trump could simply ask a handful of top FBI Management to prepare their own proposals, about who should stay, and then sack the authors of the proposals he doesn't like.

The EPA is now self-draining. Trump could not move on the FBI until the evidence came out that "they started it". It has, and they did!

The Dutch story is quite convenient... even allowing for failures of idiom and grammar in the translation it's vague .... I love the tidbit added to heavily hint that Obamah's account might be hacked... (I've been framed !!!)

However ... an assortment of teenagers around the place look to be provably more successful than the Russians and the detailed provenance of the assorted leaks is still mostly conjecture.... the content though isn't disputed - which is actually the important bit.

It would seem that the battle (if there is one?) isn't so much between Trump and the spooks as an internal one between partisan factions inside the assorted agencies some of whom had obvious contempt for the US Constitution and the laws that govern their behavior.

"... between Trump and the spooks as an internal one between partisan factions inside the assorted agencies..." tomo

Inter-departmental rivalries are one of the most wasteful activities of any organisation.

The UK Prime Minister's Cabinet all work together, until they believe that their own future employment is threatened. It is the same today, as it always has been.

The UK Civil Service is still assuming BREXIT won't happen.

The US Civil Service assumed Trump wouldn't win. For the last year, they have been assuming Trump would be ousted.

Those US Civil Servants including Secret Squirrels, who didn't join the Clinton anti-Trump Team (whether through professionalism or loathing of Clintons and Obama) are going to be very pleased. Some "old scores" will be settled, without pubicity.

I lack the ability, but it would be interesting to plot a graph showing the use of the words "Trump" and "impeach" by news organisations, including the BBC over the last 14 months.
